Fire Mountain Gems and Beads Gains Security, Manageability, Efficiency with F5 Solution

Benefits

With its F5 deployment, Fire Mountain Gems and Beads has a more manageable, consolidated, extensible platform architecture featuring enhanced security and improved performance. This cost-effective solution positions the company well for the future, offering a better customer experience while enabling administrators to plan, test, and deploy new and changed services efficiently.

Enhances functionality, cuts costs

By replacing older discrete equipment and consolidating functionality in a modular architecture from F5, Fire Mountain Gems and Beads created a cost-effective deployment that can be extended readily to accommodate the growing demands of its online business. Administrators gained a flexible, integrated environment that is easier to manage, monitor, and secure.

The company’s upgraded platform offers a much improved customer experience, and the overall cost was about 50 percent less than would have been required for a parallel piecemeal update of the old system. With the Best licensing option, administrators can deploy features and capabilities as required, which saves the company up to 65 percent compared with the cost of purchasing components individually.

Increases security, improves performance

The F5 solution provides Fire Mountain Gems and Beads with a secure, efficient combination of VPN for administrative traffic and speedy routing for production traffic to back-end services. By adding intelligent traffic management, the company boosted its efficiency in resource usage, resulting in faster page loads—and ultimately the potential for increased business. Mike Sullivan notes, “We used to encounter time-consuming customer experience and performance issues; now things just work. Before F5, client server issues were much more difficult to diagnose.”

For administrators, two-factor authentication on the VPN helps keep back-end services secure, and high visibility into network traffic enables staff to identify issues proactively, as well as isolate and fix them responsively when required. “F5 technology allowed us to address issues that were otherwise unsolvable. Using advanced features as HTTP profiles and iRules, we’ve been able to fix problems in flight, allowing our customers to get to the content they want, regardless of the URL mangling that can occur on the Internet,” says Sullivan. “With BIG-IP ASM, we can see the return code and analyze the issue; then, in the case of mangled URLs, the LTM can look at the request and map bad sequences to good characters before it even hits the web server.”

The company’s use of F5 IP Intelligence Services further enhances both security and performance by blocking potential threats and suspicious sources before they even reach the Fire Mountain network.

Makes change management quicker, easier, and safer

Change management is a key task for network administrators at Fire Mountain Gems and Beads. To maintain a secure, responsive network, they need to be able to make configuration changes and updates quickly and with as little disruption as possible to the production environment. With their new F5 platform’s virtualization features, they can now configure and test updates to pooled applications servers easily before directing production traffic to those resources.

They also can test changes to security components safely before going live. “We can bring up a new firewall pair without disrupting web traffic at all,” says Sullivan. “We now manage change efficiently using F5 technologies. Virtualization allows us to be very nimble.”

Digital Marketing Support Specialist in Grants Pass, OR

Empty Positions are Not Filled

Many times, people left, and those of us who remained were expected to take up their tasks with no extra remuneration, only a thank you. Each person on my team, including the manager was doing the job of three others by the time I took a voluntary lay-off due to COVID.

That lay-off off became permanent for the majority of those who took it, as we were not welcomed back. None of us know why, other than the owners tend to take most things personally.

Loyalty is a one way street at FMG. You are expected to be loyal and that is that.

Having said that, and even though the owners are on the opposite spectrum from how I live my life... I still like them. They were nothing but kind to me in person.

Low pay, but good job

Good job, repetitive, but very low stress. Very friendly management. HR easy to access and talk to. No issues with the company, minimum wage job though.

UX Developer in Grants Pass, OR

Standard office job

Pretty cool coworkers who had a lot of experience. It's a bigger company than you'd expect with a good deal of red tape. If you show effort by working hard it's pretty easy to stand out if that's what you're looking for. On the flip-side it's very easy to get away with coasting at FMG.

Craft Business: Tell us about the history of Fire Mountain Gems. How did the business get started? Chris & Stuart: It started as a hobby in 1973. The hobby was lapidary – cutting faceted stones. This was a great hobby for an engineer – angles, optics and gemology. The problem came when we became buried in finished stones and had to start selling them to keep going. Soon we had four people in the garage, cutting full time. We put small ads in trade magazines and started selling cut and uncut, rough gems. We started sending out flyers with lists of cut and uncut stones. This was lots more fun than engineering and we soon moved to commercial quarters, and became a rock and gem/silversmithing shop. In 1986, we moved to Oregon, USA, where we now operate as a full-service, jewellery-making supply company. CB: What approach do you take when it comes to the jewellery and beading market? C&S: When we were just starting out, a seasoned businesswoman told us, ‘Take good care of your customer and your customer will take good care of you’. That’s about the extent of the worldly wisdom we have to pass along. It sounds so easy – it isn’t. You really have to learn to listen and to be open to questioning some of your own beliefs. CB: What has been your greatest challenge? C&S: Resisting well-intentioned advice, mainly from employees and friends who have wanted us to jump onto every fad and gimmick. Anybody want to buy a room full of dumb ideas? We’ll say it again: when you need good ideas for products or processes, ask your customers. CB: What has been your greatest success so far? C&S: Our greatest joy has been watching our customer lists grow worldwide. The bulk of the growth is from referrals; one jewellery maker referring us to another. However, we don’t measure success in numbers because customers aren’t numbers, employees aren’t numbers, and vendors aren’t numbers. Those who like numbers tell us that we are now the largest fashion jewellery supply company in the world. Thanks everybody! CB: What are your most popular products? C&S: Our single most popular product was an accident. It happened more than 30 years ago. Our most popular product line then, as it is now was gemstone beads. Customers who didn’t want to buy an entire strand of one item asked us to sell the beads individually. To enable this, we got four large trays, each having 100 pockets. When customers requested them, we would carry the four trays containing 400 types/sizes/shapes of beads out of the back room and over to the front counter. As I was bringing them out one day, I tripped. The four trays flew up in the air and beads went everywhere. We had two rules: 1. If you make a mess, you clean it up, and, 2. The rules apply to everybody. As I was sweeping them up, an idea came – why don’t we sell bags of assorted beads and other desirable items. It could be like a ‘grab bag’. We would tell the customers how it originated and call it The Boss’s Bead Bag. After 35 years, that is still our bestselling item. CB: Do you provide retailers with any support? C&S: Yes, we treasure our retailers; if they don’t succeed, we cannot succeed. We provide them with: - Platinum Partner special pricing that doesn’t appear on catalogues or on the web - Advanced access to all our publications (about 2,500 pages of printed matter every year) - Patterns/designs with instructions for classroom usage - Updates on current designs and colours - Exclusive weekly previews of new items CB: What does the future hold for Fire Mountain Gems? C&S: The customers are still telling us what they want, so we are working around the clock to provide it: - New ways to order and pay, including mobile and PayPal - New products – we have 116,000 items on the web, but we get many requests daily for new items - Faster service worldwide – secure, inexpensive delivery with lowest possible tariffs or duties.

Fire Mountain Gems & Beads recognized at National Postal Forum

SAN DIEGO, CA. — The United States Postal Service today recognized Fire Mountain Gems and Beads of Grants Pass, Ore., with its Strategic Business Development Award for the company’s commitment to a successful business partnership with the Postal Service. A select group of postal customers was acknowledged and recognized for their contributions to the continued success of the mailing industry at the annual National Postal Forum, being held here this week.

The Strategic Business Development Award recognizes customers who have kept pace as technology advances. They're the innovators. They embrace new technologies and implement best practices to improve efficiency and productivity in their mail operations. They're always working to improve their operations and provide customers with a mail product that delivers increased value and business results while benefiting the mailing industry overall.

A privately-held company, Fire Mountain Gems and Beads (FMG) was founded in 1973 by Chris and Stuart Freedman. It was originally located in Studio City, CA., and now is based in Grants Pass. FMG is a mail order company and national market leader specializing in jewelry making supplies, such as gems, gold, silver, and beads. FMG’s Chief Executive Officer Vern Frol accepted the award at today’s event.

FMG was looking for a way to open up additional domestic and international channels to support its industry lead while at the same time, become more operationally efficient, reduce call center costs, transit time and enhance customer satisfaction. A meeting was set up between FMG and the U.S. Postal Service to discuss these various needs. For their international shipments, the USPS presented FMG with an international business solution resulting in a Global Expedited Package Service (GEPS) agreement which was signed by FMG.

At the same time, the USPS performed a domestic, competitive financial analysis for Priority Mail Commercial Plus Pricing (PM CPP). The final recommendations added considerable value for FMG to follow-up and implement these solutions. FMG upgraded to a brand-new, state-of-the-art shipping system for domestic and international shipments. In addition, they partnered with a PC Postage Vendor, Endicia.com, to assist in the reduction of transit time via PM CPP.

The new shipping system and Endicia.com offered ease of use in automated shipping labels, expanded custom form information, detailed reports and an interface with their new upgraded shipping system. The results for their domestic markets were very promising. Internationally, the GEPS agreement allowed FMG to ship product to an additional 100 countries. A more robust return solution is currently under consideration. The partnership forged among Endicia.com, FMG and USPS has been mutually beneficial.

The National Postal Forum is the mailing industry’s largest trade show and networking event for industry professionals. Since 1968, it has provided business mailers with ongoing training and education, and helped them keep pace with the mailing industry’s rapid progress. Held once a year in the spring, the Forum is a combination educational conference/trade show offering a wide range of opportunities for attendees. For more information, visit www.npf.org.
