[SOLVED] How to Fix Minecraft “Drivers Outdated” Message

After the Minecraft update, many players start reporting an Drivers Outdated message telling that they need to update their graphics driver. If you’re on the same boat, you’re in the right place. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to get rid of this message.

Try these fixes:

You might not need to try them all. Simply work your way down until you find the one that gives you luck.

  1. Check the versions of Minecraft and your system
  2. Make sure you’re using the latest drivers
  3. Check your default GPU

Fix 1: Check the versions of Minecraft and your system

Though the message tells you to update your graphics driver, it’s also a priority for you to make sure both your Minecraft client and system are up to date. Some players suggest that the message could also be telling you that you’re on an outdated client or system.

Verify your Minecraft version

You can use the following steps to check for Minecraft updates.

Bedrock edition
  1. On your keyboard, press Win (the Windows logo key). Then click Microsoft Store.
  2. On the top left corner, click Get updates and wait for the process to complete.
Java edition
  1. Open or restart your Minecraft launcher.
  2. If you’re not seeing an update prompt, to the right of the Play button, click the arrow and select Latest release.

Make sure you’re on the latest Windows

  1. On your keyboard, press Win+I (the Windows logo key and the i key) to open the Windows Settings app. Click Update & Security.
    update & security
  2. Click Check for updates. Windows will then download and install the available patches. It might take some time (up to 30 mins).

To confirm you’ve installed all the system updates, repeat these steps until it prompts “You’re up to date” when you click Check for updates.

Once you’ve installed all system updates, restart your PC and check if the issue persists.

If you’re still seeing the message, continue to the next fix.

Fix 2: Make sure you’re using the latest drivers

The message is self-explanatory: you need to check if you’re using the latest graphics driver. The latest video driver gives your GPU a performance boost. Unlike system updates, most of the time you need to take care of driver updates yourself.

You can update your drivers manually, by visiting your GPU manufacturer’s website (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel), then searching your model and finding the latest correct installer. This will take you some time and computer skills. But if you’re not comfortable playing with computer drivers, you can update manually with Driver Easy.

  1. Download and install Driver Easy.
  2. Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.
  3. Click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system.
(This requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All. If you don’t want to pay for the Pro version, you can still download and install all the drivers you need with the free version; you just have to download them one at a time, and manually install them, the normal Windows way.)
Update graphics drivers with Driver Easy

After updating your graphics driver, restart your PC and check if Minecraft is running fine.

If the update message pops up again, check out the next method.

Fix 3: Check your default GPU

If your computer comes with dual graphics cards, for example an Intel integrated graphics and a dedicated NVIDIA/AMD graphics card, you can check if you’re running Minecraft on the desired GPU. The update message might appear if you’re running Minecraft on the wrong GPU.

Here’s how you can check the preferred GPU of Minecraft:

If you’re on Windows 7 or 8, you can change the preferred GPU of Minecraft in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon™ Settings.

  1. At the empty area of your desktop, right-click and select Display settings.
  2. Under the Multiple displays section, click Graphics settings.
  3. Under Graphics performance preference, specify your app type (For Java Edition, select Desktop app. For Bedrock, choose Microsoft Store app). Then click Browse and select your Minecraft launcher.
  4. Click Options.
  5. Click High performance and then Save.

Now you can restart Minecraft and check if the message is still there.

Hi Sparkle. I'm Greg, an eleven years awarded MVP, Volunteer Moderator, and Independent Advisor here to help you until this is resolved.

1) See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...

2) The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...
or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...
or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

3) If that's not enough run the Store apps troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

4) Try resetting Minecraft in Windows Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Minecraft > Advanced Options > Repair or Reset. Restart PC and try again.

If those all fail then uninstall Minecraft from Settings above, restart PC, reinstall from MS Store Hub (three dots at top right of Store app) > My Library.

5) If this was caused by a Version Update then for 10 days you can roll it back in Settings>Update & Security>Recovery and then hide it until it matures using the Hide Updates Tool which is explained more here:
https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta....

If that doesn't work you can also Go Back in Repair Mode as shown here:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Same exact problem here, when I check my drivers through device managers, both my drivers are updated. I tried to download the new driver update on nividia that supports the new rtx minecraft but it failed to install. I have a gtx 1060 so that might be why. Also the game freezes everytime i press the pause button.

How to Fix Minecraft OpenGL Errors

Run into an OpenGL error when playing Minecraft? You’re not alone. So don’t panic. You can fix Minecraft OpenGL errors easily.

OpenGL accelerates Minecraft running in your computer, so you can play Minecraft faster and smoother. This feature is enabled by default in order to bring the best possible experiences to players.

The Minecraft OpenGL errors can read either:

  • Minecraft was unable to start because it failed to find an accelerated OpenGL mode.
  • OpenGL Error: 1281 (Invalid value)
  • OpenGL Error: 1286 (Invalid framebuffer operation)

How to fix Minecraft OpenGL error:

Here are the solutions for you. You shouldn’t have to try them all; just work your way down the list until your error disappears.

  1. Update your graphics card driver
  2. Turn off Advanced OpenGL in Minecraft
  3. Disable Show GL Errors
  4. Temporarily disable Mods
  5. Modify graphics settings in your game
  6. Install the latest Java version

Method 1: Update your graphics card driver

The OpenGL errors in Minecraft relates to your graphics card driver. Corrupted or outdated graphics card driver will result in Minecraft not working problem, including the OpenGL error popups. So you should update your graphics card driver to the latest version.

Two options to update your graphics card driver:

  • Option 1 – You can manually update your video driver by searching the latest driver on the website of the manufacturer, then download and install it in your computer. This requires time and computer skills.
  • Option 2 – If you don’t have the time or patience, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running, you don’t need to be troubled by the wrong driver you would be downloading, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing.

You can update your drivers automatically with either the FREE or the Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes just 2 steps (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee):

1) Download and install Driver Easy.

2) Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

3) Click the Update button next to your flagged graphics card to automatically download the latest correct driver (you can do this with the Freeversion), then manually install it in your computer.

Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system (this requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All).

4) Restart Windows to take effect.

Now launch Minecraft and see if it stops popping up the OpenGL error.

Method 2: Turn off OpenGL in Minecraft

OpenGL is enabled by default in your game, so as to provide you with the best gaming experience. However, some graphics cards don’t render the OpenGL feature. In these circumstances, you’ll see the Minecraft OpenGL errors. So you can turn off OpenGL for Minecraft to stop that error.

Here’s what to do:

1) In Minecraft, click Options > Video Settings.

2) Click the Advanced OpenGL setting, and turn it OFF.

3) Save your changes and restart your game.

Now play Minecraft and see if it works.

That’s a no go for you? Don’t worry. There are other solutions to try.

Method 3: Disable Show GL Errors

There is an option in Minecraft that decides whether to show OpenGL errors. It’s ON by default, which shows OpenGL errors in the chat. You can disable that option when there’s a known conflict.

To do so, follow the steps below:

1) In Minecraft, click Options.

2) Go to Video Settings > Others…, then click Show GL Errors to OFF.

3) Save the change and restart Minecraft.

Hopefully OpenGl errors stop happening again.

Method 4: Temporarily disable Mods

Using mods for Minecraft may cause OpenGL errors occuring in your game, as some mods may be incompatible with OpenGL. So you can temporarily disable mods for Minecraft and see if OpenGL errors stop occurring.

If OpenGL errors stop popping up, then you should find the culprit – mods. You can disable your mods one by one to troubleshoot which mod causes your problem.

If OpenGL errors still persist, mods aren’t your problem and ensure to re-enable mods later on.

Method 5: Modify graphics settings in your game

As per user reports, some graphics settings can cause OpenGL problems like OpenGL error 1281, so you can temporarily disable some graphics settings in Minecraft. It works like a charm in some cases.

You can modify graphics settings by following steps below:

1) In Minecraft, click Options > Video Settings.

2) Modify settings like VBOs, Render Region, and Clear Water. If the option is already ON, set it to OFF.

3) Modify each setting one by one and check if Minecraft error stops.

If you can’t access Minecraft video settings, you can modify these options in the configuration file under Minrcraft folder.

There is a file named options.txt that’s stored the changeable options in Minecraft. This file is located in the Minecraft folder on your computer. You can edit the settings in this options.txt file and save your changes.

If you’re not sure which option can be edited, check this post on Minecraft for more details.

Still no luck? Don’t give up hope. Move on to the next fix.

Method 6: Install the latest Java version

Minecraft is a game developed from Java, so Java files are critical to play Minecraft. If Java version is outdated in your computer, you’re likely to have the OpenGL error.

Usually Minecraft will include the Java files when downloading Minecraft. So you can uninstall Minecraft then reinstall Minecraft to have the latest compatible Java package files.

Or you can manually download Java files from this page, then follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing.

Once installed, re-launch Minecraft and see if OpenGL errors has been fixed.

So there you have it – six fixes for Minecraft OpenGL errors.
