Path Of Exile Witch guide: beginner build for Necromancer

There are a bunch of classes to choose from in Path Of Exile, but here’s the best Witch class to go for at the beginning. Of course, go for what you enjoy, but if you want a bit of guidance on the best Witch build to start with, we’ve got you covered.

If you’re looking for an easy start in Path Of Exile, look no further than the Witch. She’s a spellcaster who deals lots of damage at range, letting you stay out of the firing line and dish out punishment from afar. The Necromancer route is a great path to go down for beginners, as it allows you to get minions to deal the bulk of your damage.

Here’s a great route you can go down to make a start as the Witch in Path Of Exile.

Necromancer Witch build

Despite her high individual damage potential, one of the best ways to play with the Witch is by raising minions to do all your dirty work for you!

Necromancy, with abilities like Raise Zombie and Summon Skeletons, is a very viable way to play, especially for new players who might want to rely a bit more on AI than their own mechanical skill. It worked for me.

For this build, you want to heavily rely on the Raise Zombie gem, a gem that’ll let you raise corpses from the dead to fight for you. Remember, you have to have available corpses near you to use this, or the spell won’t work.

Necromancer passive skills

For new players, the giant skill tree can seem overwhelming. It’s okay though, just start small. You want to be looking for skills that buff your minions. At the very beginning of the tree, select ‘Energy Shield and Mana Regeneration’, as this’ll both protect you and give you more mana to summon minions as they die on you. From there, go up and to the right to upgrade your minion health and damage.

Click the ‘search here’ bar at the top of the screen and type ‘minion’ to highlight the areas of the skill tree you’ll want to be targeting, and try not to waste your skills if you’re not going towards minion buffs. After this first bit, you’ll want to start unlocking skills to the left. The following skills should be the ones you aim for within the skill tree, unlocking in the most efficient way possible to reach them:

  • Redemption - increases damage and minion movement speed, attack speed, cast speed, and accuracy
  • Gravepact - increases minion damage, attack speed, accuracy, and gives minions a 5% double damage chance
  • Righteous Army - increases minion maximum life, life regen, minion damage, and minion life regen

When you eventually complete the Labyrinth, make sure you pick the Necromancer Ascendancy skill tree and seek to gain the following skills:

  • Unnatural Strength - +2 to all minion skill gems' level
  • Plaguebringer - consuming corpses increases you and your minions' area-of-effect damage, and with corpses nearby your damage given is raised while damage taken is decreased
  • Bone Barrier - offers physical damage reduction per minion, increased recovery rate of life and energy shield per minion, and minion max life

Raise Zombie Support Gems

Here’s the gems you want to be using and levelling up throughout your build, ideally with 6-link equipment (meaning 6 gems are used and working together). If you don’t have enough gem sockets, make sure you’re keeping hold of the top ones on this list:

  • Raise Zombie - raises a zombie from a nearby corpse. Needs corpses to function
  • Deathmark Support - allows your minions to target specific enemies and deal extra damage to marked target
  • Feeding Frenzy Support - makes minions more aggressive, also giving chance to get damage and speed buffs on hit
  • Minion Damage Support - increases damage dealt by minions, obviously
  • Melee Physical Damage Support - increases physical damage from attacks made by the supported melee skill
  • Added Fire Damage Support - adds extra fire damage to supported skills (zombie attacks)

Of course, there are all kinds of gems you can use to change your Raise Zombie ability for the better, so this list isn’t the be all and end all. The most important thing is your zombies doing all your work for you, and anything past that is a bonus.

For a beginner especially, don’t sweat it! You can always change your gems, whilst passive skills are harder to tweak later on.

Other skills to use

As well as Raise Zombie, you should be looking to build out a few other spells on your Necromancer. Here are a few to try and use to maximise the benefit of your minion-summoning upgrades:

  • Summon Skeletons - creates skeletons for a short period of time to fight for you, no corpses needed
  • Carrion Golem - summons a golem that strikes with strong melee attacks and is strengthened by other minions
  • Raise Spectre - summons a defeated enemy as an allied minion
  • Desecrate - summons corpses and a patch of desecrated ground, dealing chaos damage to all enemies
  • Ball Lightning (with Curse On Hit Support) - creates a slow-moving ball of lightning damage, which curses enemy minions hit by it

SUPPORTING INFO:

Levelling

Start with Summon Raging Spirits Transition into Summon Skeletons and Raise Zombies. Support those main skills with minion life, minion damage, feeding frenzy, melee physical damage, melee splash (or any other minion gem you come across). Focus on gems in final build and start leveling them.

Levels Get 2B+1RStaff and 2B+1RChest/Boots/Helmet or (preferably)Wand 1R+2Band Shield, so that you can have:

A-Minion damage, Melee splash, Summon Raging spirit

B-Minion damage, Melee splash, Summon Skeletons

If you cannot get a 2B+1R and can get a 3Bitem somewhere

Minion damage, Infernal Legion, Summon Raging spirit

and

Minion damage, Infernal Legion, Summon Skeletons

Meanwhile, level up Raise Zombie gem elsewhere.

Gear doesn&#;t really matter as your minions do the damage and they are based on gem level. In saying that, do make sure that you continually upgrade your gear and links as you go. Use a chaos or two to buy a helping leveling unique if need be (see useful leveling uniques below).

When you reach Act 6 just make sure you are resistance capped. Goldrim is fantastic for helping with this.

More detail:

Alternate Setups (to mix things up and have some fun!)

Ranged Spectres Setup:

This setup is awesome and I often run with this.

Ranged Spectres just change up your game experience so much which spices things up greatly. They look awesome, and they are fantastic for clearing maps and we still take down all bosses with 1 or 2 seconds.

Gems (put them in a Hungry Loop ring): Raise Spectre, Spell Echo,GMP, Faster Projectiles,Empower

Some good ranged spectre options include:
- Frost Sentinel (act 8 Lunaris Concourse)
- Flame Sentinels (Act 8 Solaris Temple)
- Solar Guards (Act 8 Solaris Temple)
- Goatman Fire-Raiser (Act 6 Prisoner&#;s Gate)

Video examples:
90sec T16 Minotaur Clear using combination of Flame Sentinals, Frost Sentinals, and Solar Guard. No need for single target gem swap at boss like all other spectre builds do!: https://youtu.be/ldZZ_FmDLCs

Examples of different ranged spectres: https://youtu.be/bp9VBV1FJpE

Golem Setup (Awesome DPS and Single Target Damage)

Check out this 60 second Minotaur clear and the super fast single target.. and check me just take that Minotaur slam like a badass!:

https://youtu.be/MEImsLQKbMg

So what you gotta do?

Get these bad boys!

Then spec into some jewel sockets, and spec into Golem Commander (respec out of some life).

Swap in Carrion Golem instead of Minion Damage in Zombie setup so they both become 5 links.

You will have 15 Zombies, 4 Spectres, and 4 BIG AND BADASS GOLEMS kicking some butt oh and don&#;t forget the 50 or so Skellies that you can pop because they want in on the action too

Here is my POB with Golems setup + ranged spectre setup (this setup is REALLLYY fun High DPS, great clear, and looks epic it does have a bit less life though). But you will instakill Shaper, Uber Elder, Uber Atziri, and all end-game bosses with this setup. Note that if you use the normal melee spectres you will get even MORE dps because your zombies will have frenzy charges:
https://pastebin.com/VcgCR9wR

Instagib Bossing fun:

Swap in this belt that gives all your flasks to your minions:

Then load your flask bar with offensive flasks like these and simply pop them on bosses to annihilate them! Note you will have to swap your Brutality gem in Zombie setup for Fortify otherwise you won&#;t get the elemental damage benefits.

Build Setups for Reference

Setup 1) Balanced Setup using Saqawal&#;s Nest

This setup provides the grestest balance of DPS and Defence. Your DPS will be fantastic (greater than with Geofri&#;s) and your defence still solid (between 10, and 14, eHP).

We run 7 auras yes 7!! Note that Haste is not active while mapping though, we just pop Vaal Haste on bosses.

POB Link: https://pastebin.com/tqdhWSwm

Note that POB doesn&#;t pickup Lethal Pride jewel (left hand side) and Thread of Hope allocations - you should use skill points on Ravenous Horde and Cruel Preparation.

Purity of Elements can be swapped for Discipline for more ES, or Skitterbots for more DPS.

Carrion Golem can be swapped to Chaos Golem for more defence.

Maim can be swapped for Vaal Molten Shell for more defence.

Lethal Pride can be swapped for Elegant Hubris for more offence (swap Elegant Hubris Jewel location with either Watcher&#;s Eye, Efficient Training on right hand side, or Brawn Jewel. This is so it doesn&#;t remove your other nodes in Lethal Pride&#;s location.

NOTE:Watcher&#;s Eye, Emperor&#;s Mastery, and Lethal Pride are totally NOT needed. They are simply min-maxing for the rich folk.

Setup 2) Tanky Setup using Geofri&#;s Sanctuary

This setup is very tanky and a great option for most players. It is the setup that this build was built from and what most players at end-game currently use. It is the most tanky of the setups, but has slightly weaker DPS and movement speed compared to the Speed Setup below.

You will have over 15, HP/ES for INSANE defence, and you can kill Uber Elder in 1min 34 seconds with the BIGGEST DPS in the game WHILE PRESSING NO BUTTONS.. (literally, see video below):

https://youtu.be/mn7exUyqf48

Note that in the video above I have lower ES purely because I decided to do the run without chest amour (for the lolz!)

Note: Because we have 3 red and 3 blue sockets in chest, you can CHOOSE to either use the setup shown below (auras), or use a 6L Skeleton Setup dependingg on your preference. Auras provide smoother gameplay due to not having to raise skellies, but skellies do some great DPS.

Skeletons links would be: Vaal Summon Skeletons, Minion Damage, Feeding Frenzy,Melee Physical Damage, Multistrike, Melee Splash. Melee Splash can be swapped with Maim for bosses.

Impale in the weapon below can also be swapped for Minion Damage. The extra blue socket can provide more versatility - for example swapping in minion speed while mapping. If not using impale, war banner is better than dread banner.

If your Empower is not at least level 3, use Maim instead.

Clarity in the ring is only needed if you have the watchers eye that gives "x% if maximum mana is gained as extra maximum energy shield while affected by Clarify". Flame Dash is also good skill to put here or in another unset ring if you have one.

POB Link: https://pastebin.com/swGfbb2k

NOTE:Watcher&#;s Eye, Emperor&#;s Mastery, and Lethal Pride are totally NOT needed. They are simply min-maxing for the rich folk.

Setup 3) DPS and Speed Setup using Victario&#;s Influence

This setup provides the fastest clear speed of any summoner in the game while doing amazing DPS. The sacrifice is you are not as tanky as Setup 1 above. You can still do all content in the game with this setup very easily, but you may die here or there.

POB Link: https://pastebin.com/PsKUKsxU
POB Link (old one using Blasphemy + Vulnerability): https://pastebin.com/WhVMRkw5

NOTE:Watcher&#;s Eye, Emperor&#;s Mastery, and Lethal Pride are totally NOT needed. They are simply min-maxing for the rich folk.

Setup 4) Budget and Newbies Setup

This setup is what most new players or players at the start of a league would start with before progressing to one of the 2 setups above. It&#;s very budget friendly but obviously does not have the DPS and tankiness of the above two. This is where you should start this build, and as you make currency and get a feel for the build, you progress to your choice above.

If you need more defence, simply swap in discipline instead of flesh and stone and use chaos golem instead of carrion golem.

Enjoy!

Expedition League &#;Updated&#; & &#;Disclaimer&#;

While I generally put a lot of emphasis on updating all of my guides before a new league starts, I have decided against doing so at the moment. Many of the changes that came with PoE&#;s Expedition league launch have pretty severe gameplay impact, which is incredibly hard to predict without having the appropriate software updated (like Path of Building). Therefore, I will give all my guides a pass and point out the obvious changes. Everything outside of this paragraph will stay untouched for for now and will be updated accordingly over the course of the next weeks. This means that the information in this paragraph always supersedes anything written in the guide. Build updates will be prioritized in order of their popularity.

These are the changes I would undoubtedly make to this build:

Summary

Overall, Zombies got hit quite a bit with these changes. More than anything, the Impale changes will hurt them most. Additionally, Rumi&#;s getting a hit is something we didn&#;t really needed on this build. You&#;ll be losing a decent chunk of your Block which obviously results in less overall tankiness. If the game actually slows down like they are trying to achieve, minions will be blasting, that&#;s a given. Overall, as long as you can invest a semi-decent amount of currency into it, Zombies will remain a very playable and new player friendly build.

Introduction

The Raise Zombie Raise Zombie gem, which is the cornerstone of this build, was historically in an awkward place and more of a niche build than anything else. Minions as a whole received a complete rework with the release of Blight League and immediately rose to being the most popular Archetype in Path of Exile. While this build focuses on Zombies to deal the majority of your damage, it is amplified by a variety of other summons such as an Animate Guardian Animate Guardian, a Summon Carrion Golem Summon Carrion Golem and some utility Raise Spectre Raise Spectres.

The main upside of playing a Summoner Archetype is being able to have your Minions deal the damage while you stay out of the fray. Since your Minions are incredibly tanky and almost impervious to damage, they can be sent into the battle and have a % uptime on their damage. This results in a very reliable build that is able to clear all content with relative ease and makes it so it is very recommended for newer players to get familiar with all endgame content. It has maintained such high damage and survivability numbers that even the most veteran players often utilize it to tackle the hardest challenges.

Since you will summon your entire army of Minions beforehand, you will only be focused on utility skills and positioning while clearing maps. By using Convocation Convocation to position your minions and a Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support setup to keep all your buffs up, we will keep ourselves busy while our Minions kill everything that there is to be found.

As for the Ascendancy, the Necromancer is impossible to go without. It will offer you 2 extra gem levels on all of your Minion Gems, which makes them really hard to kill and scales their damage up quite significantly. Next up, you&#;ll also be granting your Raise Zombie Raise Zombies more Attack Speed and Resistances. Lastly, we&#;re offering you a choice. Whether you pick Bone Barrier or Mistress of Sacrifice is completely up to you yet we will be presenting you with the differences and benefits / downsides later on in the guide.

Build Summary

A Necromancer Raise Zombie Raise Zombie build such as this one really requires no high-end gear to function on a higher end level. Next up, it has no difficult mechanics tied to it so it is incredibly suited for newer players playing their first (or first couple) builds. It provides you with an acceptable leveling experience assuming you can at least get The Baron The Baron. Otherwise, you&#;ll have to resort to other types of Minions to get to your endgame setup.

At its peak, in Blight League, this build trivialized the entire game on a reasonably low budget. Players were running multiple clients to literally &#;AFK&#; Blighted Maps or went to get a drink while their Minions finished off the last Sirus Phase. Obviously, a build that could kill the endgame bosses & endgame content without the player being at his computer was going to get nerfed. As expected, in Delirium it got hit really hard. The Baron The Baron took a significant hit, mainly making it so you require Strength instead of Strength to get an extra Zombie. This ends up costing you about 3 Zombies at endgame gear and thus +/- about 20% damage. On top of that, the other relevant modifiers on The Baron The Baron now do roll instead of being a fixed stat. This means that a really high roll Baron is now a little harder to acquire.

Obviously, a 20% damage nerf for a build that trivialized the game to an extent that a Zombiemancer could wasn&#;t enough, so the Raise Zombie Raise Zombie gem also got significant nerfs to both the way the Minion Life and damage worked. It lost around 25% damage on the gem and most of its Minion Life scaling. Luckily, even after all these nerfs the build remained very playable and strong on a reasonable amount of gear. Additionally, after the Harvest Expansion and the introduction of Cluster Jewels, it is possible to min-max it to the same level as it was before.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Very suitable Hardcore build

+ Great at killing bosses through its damage uptime

+ Incredible sustain through The Baron The Baron

+ Easy & simple to play and execute

Cons

&#; Minion builds are sometimes boring to play for some

&#; This variation of a Summoner requires specific items to work

&#; Requires some optimization to tackle the hardest content

Echoes of the Atlas Expansion Updates

This build has survived multitudes of patches where it was tried to nerf Minion builds altogether. This time around, it has dodged about all the nerfs (- the small nerfs to the small notables in Necromancer, but that&#;s honestly not even relevant)! This means that it is completely fine and will most likely be even better than before, because of the re-introduction of Harvest League! Perhaps you get to craft an Amulet with Strength, % Attributes and an Extra Zombie, for example, which was previously borderline impossible!

The only thing that potentially could pose a problem is the nerf to Spectres&#; Levels. This might mean that you&#;ll more easily lose one of these, which will have to be fixed by playing better with Convocation. However, if you look at minions&#; stats in Path of Building, the Spectres still have over 5x the effective Health Pool of any character in PoE. I feel like they&#;ll still survive everything and therefore won&#;t pose any issues!

Playstyle, Mechanics & Strengths

As one would come to expect out of most Summoner Archetypes, you intend to raise an army of Summons to help you in battle and do most of the heavy lifting for you. Since the cornerstone of the build is The Baron The Baron Unique, we&#;re looking to find as much Strength as we can without compromising other stats. This means that, through Strength adding Flat Life, it is really easy to achieve a high amount of Life on the build. On top of that, through usage of specific Unique items (such as Geofri's Sanctuary Geofri's Sanctuary and Shaper's Touch Shaper's Touch) we can add a surprising amount of Energy Shield on top of that to create an even bigger layer of defense.

Being a Necromancer also offers us the possibility to use the Glancing Blows keystone in combination with Mistress of Sacrifice as an Ascendancy Node and Bone Offering Bone Offering if we want to go even more defensive with our choices. Since we can only activate a single Offering skill at the same time, that forces us to forego the Flesh Offering Flesh Offering skill which is a significant boost of damage to our Zombies. Which choice of Offering skill you take is entirely up to you and depends on whether you feel like picking up some more defenses or being a little more on the offensive side. Luckily, this just involves a Skill Point and a single gem swap so you could easily swap back and forth to test out both avenues yourself.

Other than potentially running max block and Bone Offering Bone Offering, this build offers an obscenely high effective Life pool. Getting up to Life as well as Energy Shield isn&#;t hard to achieve and, since your Zombies will leech Life to you through The Baron The Baron and you will have Energy Shield regeneration through Zealot&#;s Oath, you will be topped up the entire time during most encounters.

Contrary to what one might think, Convocation Convocation also offers a decent amount of survivability. Whilst it is mainly used to position your Minions while you are running around through maps / encounters, it can also be used as a panic button whenever you find yourself alone for some reason. Minions do tend to go and do awkward things sometimes so it&#;s nice to have this skill to be able to bring them back to you instantaneously.

Playstyle-wise, you&#;re really just running around using Cyclone Cyclone which will be linked to Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support, Desecrate Desecrate and either Bone Offering Bone Offering or Flesh Offering Flesh Offering, as you chose. This keeps the selected Offering up at all times as well as guaranteeing uptime on all Corpse-related mechanics that Necromancer gives you.

To further increment our damage and the Army of Summons that&#;ll protect us at all costs, we&#;ll be running a Raise Spectre Raise Spectre, Summon Carrion Golem Summon Carrion Golem, and Animate Guardian Animate Guardian setup. The Raise Spectre Raise Spectres are used to summon two Host Chieftains, a Carnage Chieftain, and a Merveil&#;s Retainer. These are merely utility Spectres and will be linked to Lifetap Support Lifetap Support just so they can spam out their abilities more often. By doing so, they will grant your Zombies Power and Frenzy charges and curse enemies with Vulnerability to further increase the damage your Zombies deal.

The Summon Carrion Golem Summon Carrion Golem just grants your Minions a really nice amount of Physical damage. Since our Zombies mainly deal Physical damage, this is quite a significant buff and scales your damage very well.

The Animate Guardian Animate Guardian is the last piece in your puzzle and fulfills the role of being a Lieutenant for your Army. Through specific item choices it will grant you and your Zombies Culling Strike, Fortify and a decent chunk of Critical Strike Multiplier. On top of that it will also blind all enemies in its range. The rest of the items we use for the Animate Guardian Animate Guardian are solely focused on keeping it alive and protecting the items you consume through summoning it.

As you already figured out, aside from whirling around through Cyclone Cyclone and watching your army of Minions absolutely destroy the game, you&#;re free to do as you wish! The build plays very relaxingly and is very recommended for players who like to play at a decent pace yet don&#;t want to be pressing a multitude of buttons all the time.

Passive Skill Tree, PoB, and Gem Links

You can find an optimized Path of Building here. Every build I release will use the community fork of Path of Building, which is maintained and updated in a much more regular fashion than the original one. You can find PoB&#;s Fork, by LocalIdentity, here.

If you are not comfortable with Path of Building, we also have a Poeplanner for you. Do note that PoE Planner does not support Cluster Jewels and some specific unique jewels and it is highly recommended you install Path of Building to follow builds most optimally.

These are Glancing Blow trees / setups which have changed a little since the introduction of Heist League. Because Glancing Blows got moved into the range of our Lethal Pride Lethal Pride we can now no longer rely on this to get more Strength. If you&#;re still looking to optimize into getting strength, a specific PoB can be found on the Passive Skill Tree page.

More information about the Passive Skill Tree, as well as all the Gem Links can be found on our dedicated page.

A lot of this is explained more in depth in the Gear Page, however we will provide you with a basic idea of what gear you&#;re looking for in this short summary.

Gear, Jewels and Flasks Breakdown

Leveling

Since we are very adamant about trying to give you a leveling experience that lies as close to your endgame playstyle as possible, we will be providing you a way to level up with Raise Zombie Raise Zombie. If you are looking for the most optimal way to level a character to maps, we refer you to the following guides.

In order to level this build as a Raise Zombie Raise Zombie build you will need a The Baron The Baron and get to level 28 in order to equip it or mule a Summon Holy Relic Summon Holy Relic and a Smite Smite from a Templar.

Getting to Brutus & Merveil

For starters, create a Witch in whichever league you want to start. Optionally, you can create a Templar and kill Hillock quickly to be able to rush the Mud Flats quest while taking Smite Smite as a quest reward from killing Hillock. You want to get a Summon Holy Relic Summon Holy Relic from the quest reward so you can start using Zombies earlier. Witch can&#;t access this gem otherwise until Act III. Make sure to store the Summon Holy Relic Summon Holy Relic and Smite Smite gems and swap back to your Witch to start leveling.

You will want to start out by buying two Wands from the vendor. On top of that, you want to buy an Explosive Trap Explosive Trap as well. After you&#;ve run the Mud Flats, you&#;ll proceed to kill Hailrake in the Tidal Island with Explosive Trap Explosive Trap.

From there on, you&#;ll be able to pick up your first Quicksilver Flask Quicksilver Flask and a Frost Bomb Frost Bomb from your quest rewards, linking it to Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support and Onslaught Support Onslaught Support. It&#;s important that you never level up your Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support for now. One Frost Bomb Frost Bomb and a single Explosive Trap Explosive Trap should kill most packs.

After killing Brutus, you will be adding an Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support to your Frost Bomb Frost Bomb links replacing the Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support. The Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support will be linked to a Flame Dash Flame Dash, which is also available as a quest rewards after killing Brutus. You will stick to this setup until level 12 and until you have killed Merveil.

Changes at Level 12

After we&#;ve killed Merveil we will try to have the necessary links and currency to get ourselves the following link if you decided against picking up a Summon Holy Relic Summon Holy Relic:

  1. Summon Raging Spirit Summon Raging Spirit
  2. Minion Damage Support Minion Damage Support
  3. Melee Splash Support Melee Splash Support

If you did go for the Templar Mule, you could run the following Raise Zombie Raise Zombie links:

  1. Raise Zombie Raise Zombie
  2. Minion Damage Support Minion Damage Support
  3. Melee Splash Support Melee Splash Support

Additionally, you&#;re going to attack with Smite Smite while having a Summon Holy Relic Summon Holy Relic summoned. This&#;ll grant you and your Zombies a permanent Lightning Damage Aura and a Life Regeneration Aura.

You can also use Summon Skitterbots Summon Skitterbots to supplement our damage until level 28. After we&#;ve set ourselves up for success till level 28, we can prepare to start the Zombie gameplay.

Transition to The Baron The Baron

Make sure to socket your Raise Zombie Raise Zombie links in The Baron The Baron so they benefit from the Helmet&#;s inherent Minion Skill Levels. You can drop your Summon Raging Spirit Summon Raging Spirit, Explosive Trap Explosive Trap and Frost Bomb Frost Bomb, and end up with the following link:

  1. Raise Zombie Raise Zombie
  2. Minion Damage Support Minion Damage Support
  3. Minion Speed Support Minion Speed Support
  4. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support (or ###item:Melee-Splash-Support)

Something fun you can add to your Zombiemancer to add a bit of spice while leveling are the Summon Holy Relic Summon Holy Relics.

  1. Summon Holy Relic Summon Holy Relic
  2. Minion Damage Support Minion Damage Support
    Predator Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support

If you attack with Static Strike and link it to Increased Duration it will keep pulsing the AoE attacks for a while, which will activate your Summon Holy Relic Summon Holy Relic for an extensive duration, making it so they clear packs and keep your Zombies alive.

  1. Static Strike Static Strike
  2. Increased Duration Support Increased Duration Support
  3. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  1. Summon Carrion Golem Summon Carrion Golem at level

Aura-wise you can run Pride Pride, Flesh and Stone Flesh and Stone, and Summon Skitterbots Summon Skitterbots after you pick up the Sovereignty wheel.

Leveling Trees

Here&#;s a Path of Building with all leveling gem setups and a Passive Skill Tree that will get you through the leveling process. If you&#;re not used to using Path of Building, you can use this Passive Skill Tree instead.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are a couple of items that can make your leveling process a lot smoother. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you are able to use specific support gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent amount of movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient and a Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of Elemental Resistances which help a great deal during the leveling.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the Gearing section.

Questions & Support

I made it a habit to check all comments in my guides on a daily basis. Obviously, there might be occurrences where getting a reply might take longer but I really do try to get back to you as soon as possible. I prefer you making remarks, suggestions or asking questions that way as it allows others to read through the comments, providing them with a potential answer to their question, without having to wait for me again. If I have somehow missed your question, you can try reaching me on our Discord.

If you enjoy my content to such an extent that you&#;d like to support me and my work, I have a Patreon you can check out. At no point should you feel pressured to contribute, but if you do, your support means more to me than you will ever imagine.

FAQ

Why Would Zombies be Chosen over Spectres?

Spectres have been gaining popularity ever since Zombies took a hit in Delirium League. While they both accomplish the same in terms of damage and playstyle, I think Zombies are easier to gear for. Zombies generally get you to endgame on a medium budget yet still carry on to the highest content on that budget when Spectres are cheap to get into but can also get a lot more expensive on the very top end of gearing. Next up, playing a Zombiemancer does feel a lot different from a Spectre Summoner and in a game like Path of Exile diversity is king!

Reaching Strength Seems Hard, at What Level Should this be Achieved?

This shouldn&#;t be an issue at all as of level Obviously, depending on your gear levels, you might have to forego some optimal nodes to pick up more Strength first. Reaching Strength is really important though, and should be prioritized above anything else when it comes to gearing / passives.

Conclusion

Our Zombiemancer Necromancer is a new player-friendly character that really feels like a Classic Summoner. Your army of minions will surround you, protect you and go to war for you. Whilst they are busy fighting off your enemies, you will be supporting them with Auras, Offerings, Buffs and whatnot. This build handles all content in the game very well and is an excellent recommendation for people who would like to get in to learning the game better. It also provides a very steep min-maxxing game at the very highest levels of gear for those who enjoy that last 5% optimization.

It can be really strong as a League-Starter, yet shouldn&#;t be played in a Solo-Self Found environment as it requires The Baron The Baron to work!

Path of Exile 3.15 - Mage Skeleton Build - Necromancer Witch - PoE Expedition - PoE 3.15

Path of Exile is a game of huge flexibility. When you pick some character archetype it doesn’t represent what this character will look like in the endgame. You can be caster Marauder, or melee Witch or whatever you want. But summoners are another extra level of flexibility in PoE. Because the variations of your character’s progression are dozens. You can use golems as damage dealers, or supports. Your zombies can be the main source of damage or just buff your golems. Summon Raging Spirit, Summon Skeletons, Summon Holy Relic &#; all these skills can have a lot of variations. And don’t forget about Spectres. These minions are truly unique because this ability resurrects fallen monsters to serve you in their undeath. And these spectres have all the abilities of a regular monster! That gives you an insane amount of possibilities. You can summon a couple of different spectres to buff your army of undead. Or you can build an army, using only spectres. And they don’t have to be of one type. You can mix your spectre army with different monsters. In this guide, we will take a look at some summoner variations and will create our own Master-Necromancer.

Pros and Cons

Before we start to build our PoE summoner, let&#;s take a look at some positive and negative sides of summoners in Path of Exile.

Pros:

  • Beginner friendly &#; if you are following a guide, almost any minion build is pretty easy to play;
  • League starter &#; minions have extremely high damage compared to many other abilities in the conditions of the league start, and most of the required uniques are pretty cheap and common;
  • Huge build variety &#; as it was said, the number of minion builds are extremely high so everyone can find something he likes;
  • Insane scaling potential &#; with a huge amount of currency your summoner can become a literal god.

Cons:

  • Specific gameplay &#; some people like to do damage by themselves, and in most minion builds you are just the commander of legions but not the damage dealer;
  • A lack of sockets &#; you will need many different minions for most builds (supports and DPSers) so there is no space for utility gems;
  • High-end versions are really expensive.

If you decide to play a minion build, you must be ready for two things &#; passive gameplay and the high cost of endgame gear. By passive gameplay, we mean that you don’t actually have any attack button. Instead, you will try to stay in safe spots, sometimes buff your pets and resummon them if they die. And, speaking about cost, if you don’t have enough time to level up character and farm currency, you can just use our custom build service or summoner offer!

So let&#;s look closely at summoner’s gameplay.

Playstyle and mechanics

Most of the Path of Exile minion builds imply that you will keep some distance from your enemies while your pets kill them. But you are not just simply waiting for the fight’s end. You must empower your army to prove its success. So how does minion build gameplay in PoE looks like? You have to cast an ability that will trigger your Desecrate and Flesh Offering. As you can trigger spells, socketed in your wand, only once per 8 seconds, you don’t really need to spam your “trigger ability”. Simply cast it once and then dodge encounter mechanics.

giphy

Another active ability you have is Convocation. This skill resummons all of your pets to your location and buffs them with life regeneration. Unfortunately, pets can’t predict where you want to go, so they always will be behind you during mapping. And here comes the Convocation. When you reach a pack of monsters, you can use this skill to unleash your undead army upon it. At some point, your minions will become so fast that you don’t need to use this ability. But it will stay useful for some situations, such as forcing your pets to attack some monsters during blight encounter.

pets attack  For minion DPS scaling you will need special minion nodes on the passive skill tree as well as on your gear. All nodes and items with the “Minion” tag will affect your pet’s damage. If your build uses zombies, spectres or skeletons, you want to have nodes from the passive tree, that increase their maximum amount. So here is the list of best stats for our character in most situations:

  • Maximum number of minions
  • Flat physical/elemental damage for minions (from abys jewels)

Minion build variations

You can divide all minions in Path of Exile by two types &#; damage dealers and supports. Some of them can belong to both types at the same time. But if you build your character around Zombies, you can’t make your Carrion golem do huge damage. And that works contrariwise. So you have to choose which minion will be your main source of damage and which will empower them.

There are only four effective Ascendancies you can choose for summoner build &#; Scion, Guardian, Elementalist and Necromancer. Each has some strong and weak points so let’s look closely at them.

Scion

Ascendant-ascendancy-class

Scion is the most flexible archetype of all. You have more skill points than other archetypes and can combine their Ascendancies to make a unique build. The problem is that you have only about half of the power of each Ascendancy you choose. So if you decide to play Scion you have to know “why” you do it. Usually, the reason is to use more cluster jewels, but for most of the builds, you don’t really need to be a Scion.

Guardian

Guardian-Builds

Guardian isn’t exactly a minion-specialised Ascendancy, but because of his specialisation in empowering allies, he can be a good choice. It is definitely not the most powerful Ascendancy for the minion build, but, probably, one of the best in terms of defensives and for sure has its niche.

Elementalist

Elementalist-ascendancy-class

Elementalist isn&#;t a pure minion Ascendancy. As you can see from her name, it is more about elemental magic and spellcasting. However, she has Golem-specialisation nodes which makes her one of the best Golemancer in PoE.

Necromancer

Necromancer-ascendancy-class

You still can do some great spellcasting builds, using Necromancer, but for most situations, it is a pure minion specialist. Lots of minion-specific nodes, Offering specialisation, corpse-related nodes &#; Necromancer is the commander of undead legions and the best Ascendancy for almost every minion build.

So, it’s time to choose what minion build we want to play. We want our build to be a great and cheap starter as well as have the possibility to scale its damage for any endgame activity. So one of the best variants is “Summon Skeleton” with “Dead Reckoning” unique jewel, which transforms our Skeletons into Skeleton mages. And our Ascendancy will be Necromancer as it is the strongest summoner in the game.

Skeleton mages Necromancer

Passive tree

Every minion build has to pick the same nodes on the passive skill tree. The only difference is the way to these nodes and what you want to drop if you use cluster jewels in your build. For example, if you use two big clusters, you can drop some minion-specific nodes, because the best talents on cluster jewels are usually stronger than on the regular passive tree. But it all depends on the situation and if you don’t want to lose damage, you can always drop some life nodes. So we will look at two variants &#; with and without clusters.

No Cluster Jewel tree:

On the basic version, without cluster jewels, we will need all Minion-specified nodes, Life nodes and some very important talents for our damage and survivability. These talents are Glancing Blows and Elemental Equilibrium. The first one doubles our block chance, but makes us take 65% of blocked damage instead of fully blocking it. The main point of it, that you must have “recover 5% of Life when you block” from your shield so you will overheal incoming damage The second greatly increases our damage. As we summon three types of skeleton mages, one of each element, Elemental Equilibrium always will buff our minion’s damage. Also one of the most important things is a unique threshold jewel &#; Dead Reckoning. Because of it our skeletons become Skeleton mages and without it, the build simply doesn’t work.

Dead ReckoningDeadReckoningDead Reckoning &#; the core of our build

Cluster Jewel tree version:

Cluster skill tree

With Cluster Jewels our skill tree will get a few changes. We have to drop some Life and Minion nodes to get enough skill points for our clusters. Also, as we lose some effective HP, we will need more offence. For that case, we will take a timeless unique jewel &#; Glorious Vanity.  But there is one important thing about it. Each timeless jewel changes or upgrades passive skills on the tree and can roll two parameters &#; General and Number. General determines what keystone passive you will get instead of a regular one, and the number just rolls bonuses on other passives on your tree. For our build, we need the Divine Flesh keystone passive, which increases our maximum Chaos resistance by 5%, but makes all damage bypass the energy shield and convert 50% of elemental damage taken to chaos damage

Cluster jewels we will need must be with “Minion damage” for Large and “Minion life” for Medium cluster bases. Also, we will need one small cluster jewel with chaos resistance on it. Talents from jewels must be &#; “Feasting Fiends”, “Renewal” and “Call to the Slaughter” for the large ones, “Life from Death”, “Renewal” and “Blessed Rebirth” from medium and “Born of Chaos” for the small one. Also, we don’t need to take all of the talents from large clusters. We only need to take 2 jewel sockets so you can skip the farthest talents on them.

Ascendancy points:

Ascendancy points

The first Ascendancy talent we will take is “Mindless Aggression”, which simply buffs our minions.

The second one will be “Unnatural Strength”. This talent gives us “+2 level of all minion skill gems” and this is one of the most powerful attributes for any minion build.

“Commander of Darkness”  will give us both damage and survivability and will be good for capping our elemental resistances.

The last talent we will need is “Mistress of Sacrifice”. It will make our Offering skills also affect us at half of their power, so we will cast and move faster.

Gear progression

Our starter gear isn’t so expensive. We will need any 6-linked body armour with Life and Resistances, a rare Convoking wand with some minion mods and, perfectly, with “+1 to Level of All minion skill gems”. Darkness Enthroned belt and Alberon’s Warpath boots are our core uniques, that we will use even in the endgame, so you can buy them at the very beginning.

The hardest and at the same time the most enjoyable thing about any minion build is getting good endgame equipment. Some of the gear pieces can have insane prices so you must be ready for it. At the same time, you can keep upgrading your build over and over again and it will become truly godlike. Below we will take a look at some good endgame versions of summoner gear you should aim for.

Weapon:

The best weapon for us will be a rare Convoking Wand, because it’s the only weapon that can roll minion modifiers. So, what mods do we need? The most powerful two are “+1 to level of all Spell skill gems” and “+1 to level of all Minion skill gems”. Our endgame wand must contain both of them. The second important mod we need is “Trigger socketed spell when you use a Skill”. It allows us to automatise our corpse generation and Offering casts. The other mods should be “Minion damage” and/or “Minion attack and cast speed”. Double Skill gem level plus Trigger mod is already a great variant, and any extra Minion mod will make this wand extremely more expensive.

Convoking-WandEndgame wand

Endgame wand example

Armour:

You can start with any rares with Life and resistances, but for endgame, you will need to swap them to some specific items.

Our endgame boots are Alberon’s Warpath so you can get them from the beginning because they aren’t very expensive. But with other items, you can have some difficulties.

AlberonsWarpathAlberon's Warpath

Our best high-end gloves are Breathstealer. All because of that you can apply an extra anoint on them in addition to their good bonuses.

BreathstealerBreathstealer gloves

There is a bit more complexity in our helmet and body armour. For body armour, you have some flexibility. You can take Fleshcrafter unique, which makes our Skeletons ignore enemies elemental resistances or you can make a well crafted one on Sacrificial Garb base. As we are using Elemental Equilibrium, we will stay with the second variant. The point of using a Sacrificial Garb base is implicit “+1 to level of all vaal skill gems”. As we are using Vaal Summon Skeletons, it will give us a lot of extra damage.

FleshcrafterFleshcrafter Body armour

Best choice if you don’t use Elemental Equilibrium

      Well crafted body armour example

For our helmet, we will need a Bone Helmet base with Minion’s Life extra link mod, Life, resistances and “+1 to maximum summoned Skeletons”. We will place our Animate Guardian in a helmet and if he dies you will lose all items he had, so extra minion’s life is pretty helpful.

Endgame Helmet

      Endgame Helmet example

There are two important mods on our shield &#; “recovers 5% of Life when you block” and “+2% to all maximum resistances”. Other stats should be Maximum Life and Elemental resistances. You can choose what base type for your shield you want, but in this guide, we will stay on Battle Buckler because of its movement speed implicit.

BattleBucklerendgame shield

Jewelry:

There are no special requirements for our rings. Generally, it’s our main source of elemental and chaos resistances. Good addition to it will be life and minion damage. If you are short of gem sockets, you can take an Unset ring base, otherwise, the best option for you will be an Amethyst ring.

Our amulet must have “+1 to level of all Intelligence skill gems” and “+1 to maximum number of skeletons” mods. Other stats aren’t so important, but perfectly you should have Maximum Life, resistances and some damage mods on it.

Example of good Amulet

For our belt we will use unique Darkness Enthroned or if we have some resistance issues, a rare Stygian Vise. In abyss sockets, we will place Ghastly Eye Jewels with minion damage mods and life.

Animate Guardian:

Most of the summoners have not only their own gear but also special items they give to their Animate Guardian. This minion consumes armour and weapons to increase his attributes. He also gets all of the item’s bonuses. You can use every item you want for your Animate Guardian, but only one per slot. There are two variants of what exact items you will need for your Animate Guardian &#; cheap and endgame.

Cheap version:

We will need five items &#; four armour pieces and a weapon.

Our best cheap weapon will be Dying Breath unique staff. It will debuff our enemies as well as giving our Guardian some block chance.

Guardian’s helmet will be the Leer Cast. It will increase the maximum life of our Animate Guardian and our other minion’s damage.

We will use Ambu’s Charge body armour, so we can generate endurance charges for us and our minions.

Our Animate Guardian will use Vicrario’s Flight unique boots, to give us a movement speed aura.

boots for Animate Guardian

There are no special requirements for gloves, so you can use any with life and defensives.

Expensive version:

We will use the same boots and gloves in the expensive version so let’s check other items.

Our Guardian should have Kingmaker in his hands, so he will give us and our other pets Fortify and Culling strike.

endgame weapon for Animate Guardian

The endgame helmet for the Animate Guardian is Crown of the Tyrant. You should roll the socket colour to blue on it before giving it to your Guardian, so it will provide a huge amount of flat lightning damage to our minions as well as reducing nearby enemies elemental resistances.

CrownOfTheTyrantCrown of the Tyrant

Finally, the best body armour for our Guardian will be Doppelgänger Guise. This item will grant huge survivability for the Animate Guardian and because he is wearing some really pricey items, you don’t want him to die and lose them.

Flasks:

The only unique flask you will need is Rumi’s Concoction Granite flask. It will give you a huge amount of block and spell block, especially with Glancing Blows keystone passive. Also, you will need a Life flask with instant recovery and Bleed immunity, a Quicksilver flask, Basalt flask and Quartz flask with curse immunity and freeze immunity on them.

Boots:

Our sockets in boots we will fill with Raise Zombie, Convocation, Feeding Frenzy and Summon Stone Golem. Zombies are simply the “meat shield” between us and the enemy. Desecrate              Spell Cascade        Flesh Offering

Gloves:

In gloves, we will use Arcanist Brand + Hydrosphere + Sniper’s Mark + Blade Blast. Arcanist Brand will trigger all linked spells as well as spells socketed in our wand (because of the “trigger mod”). Hydrosphere applies exposure, which reduces enemies elemental resistances by 10%, Sniper’s Mark reduces enemy’s resistances to projectiles, and Blade Blast will Unnerve your foes.

Shield:

Auras for our build we will put into a shield. We will need Zealotry, Summon Skitterbots and Generosity support. Generosity will make your Zealotry aura affect only your allies (minions) with increased effect, but not affect you at all. And Skitterbots will simply apply Chill and Shock to nearby enemies.

Pantheon and Bandits

Pantheon

Soul of the Brine King is a great choice for a major god. It will give us temporary stun immunity and faster stun and block recovery. And for minor god, you can pick the Soul of Shakari. As we will get 50% of elemental damage as chaos damage with Glorious Vanity timeless jewel, 5% extra chaos damage taken reduction will help us a lot.

Our build will require a lot of skill points so the best option will be to kill all of the Bandits.

Levelling as a summoner is probably one of the easiest in Path of Exile. There are no special requirements and you can start with skeletons, or use zombies until you reach maps. All you will need for comfortable levelling are Tabula Rasa and Goldrim.
