Internet sex video blights career of Korean pop star

She was the country's top female pop star, a budding diva whose sexy moves scandalised older South Koreans and made her a huge star among the young. Then 'the video' hit the internet.

A brief cyberwar broke out. Fans of the singer, Baek Ji Young, tried to paralyse internet sites offering a video showing Baek having sex with a former producer. But the web's voracious nature could not be denied. The video clip multiplied and raced across the net, reportedly at a rate of , copies in a day. Baek, 24, at first hid on an island and denied she was the woman in the video. But then she held a tearful news conference to confess and apologise.

The star was the casualty of a clash of cultures. South Korea is one of the most 'wired' countries in the world, but it is also a traditional society in which sex is seen as a private matter and premarital sex is a scandal.

Baek is not the first casualty. Miss Korea , Oh Hyun Kyung, 30, fled an acting career and South Korea last year after a video of her having sex with a boyfriend hit the internet. Since an estimated third of South Korea's 47 million people use the internet, one of the highest rates in the world, 'it was like branding her with a scarlet letter', one observer said. The internet and new forms of communication are 'changing Korean society very rapidly', said Henry Paik, a showbusiness columnist. 'But this still isn't America or Europe. Here, if you have premarital sex, you are treated like a criminal.'

There is a grudging suspicion in South Korea that this is all somehow the fault of the United States. Censors used to clip risqué parts out of American movies and videotapes. Now the internet and DVD have bypassed them. American rap has spawned Korean rap, complete with profanity. A local performer, Seo Tai Ji, has just released a music video with explicit sex and nudity.

'Times are changing too fast,' grumbled Oh Kwang Hwan, 55, an estate agent. 'I was shocked that the younger generation could even come up with an idea like making a sex video and putting it on the internet.'

Two male celebrities have also been caught in recent sex scandals. An actor, Song Young Chang, 42, was sentenced in November to 10 months in prison for having sex with a year-old girl. Joo Byung Jin, who runs a TV production company, was charged last month with beating a student after forcing her to have sex.

These latest scandals show that the entertainment industry's sordid reputation is in some ways still deserved, said Paik. 'There used to be three ways to get into the business: bribery, sex or political influence,' he said. Although changes in the industry have reduced the power of producers and directors, he said, those are still familiar routes to success.

Baek's video offers a poignant example. The first half, apparently shot two years ago, shows her nervously practising imaginary media interviews under the direction of the producer. In the second half, they have sex. Baek insists she did not know the camera was rolling.

The ex-producer, Kim Si Won, has disputed her claims of ignorance. 'We watched it together afterwards and enjoyed it,' he said.

Others are also cynical about Baek's claims. Paik said it was not uncommon for managers or producers to insist that starlets make such videos, in case the woman tries to dump her old associates after she becomes successful. The speed of the internet makes such weapons more potent.

'Ten years ago these things ended with just a few rumours,' Paik said. 'Now the evidence goes out on the web.'

Baek Ji Young is making headlines for revealing the shocking amount of money she made from one of her songs.

The singer recently appeared on Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 as the special host of the show&#;s broadcast. Singer Lee Ji Hye, who is famously known to be one of Baek Ji Young&#;s closest friends also made an appearance on this episode. While the two share an incredibly close friendship with one another, the two confessed that there are still some topics they don&#;t discuss with one another.

When I ask Lee Ji Hye something, she answers everything to the point where I wonder, &#;should she think about the answer before responding.&#; However, I asked her how much money she made on YouTube recently, but she didn&#;t answer that question.

— Baek Ji Young

To her friend&#;s comment, Lee Ji Hye responded that while she has no problem answering how much she made from YouTube, she just felt small in comparison to the OST queen.

Honestly, I can tell her how much I make. But Baek Ji Young-sshi is a woman who makes ₩ billion KRW (about $ million USD) from one OST (soundtrack) so no matter how much I make, it will seem small. It was because I was embarrassed.

— Lee Ji Hye

Lee Ji Hye was referring to Baek Ji Young&#;s previous confession when she made a guest appearance on Video Star back in January of this year. During her time on the show, Baek Ji Young revealed that her hit OST song, &#;Don&#;t Forget Me&#; from IRIS garnered her a whopping ₩ billion KRW (about $ million USD). The singer also shared during her time on the talk show that &#;The OST, &#;That Woman&#; from SBS&#;s &#;Secret Garden&#; also did very well, but the money I made from &#;Don&#;t Forget Me&#; can&#;t be beat.&#;

Baek Ji Young is famous for her beautiful voice and her ability to deliver her songs with endless emotions. The veteran singer has earned herself the title of &#;OST Queen&#; in South Korea due to her numerous soundtrack hits to different K-movies and K-dramas. The singer has dozens of hits under her belt, such as &#;Like Being Hit By A Bullet&#;, &#;That Woman&#; from Secret Garden, &#;See You Again&#; from Mr. Sunshine and more, but it looks like &#;Don&#;t Forget Me&#; from the Korean drama, IRIS has remained number one.

Singer Baek Ji-young is canceling her plans for a concert tour across Korea due to the continued high numbers of coronavirus-positive cases, her agency Tri-Us Entertainment announced Monday.

Tickets to the titled “BAEK-HUG” tour, which was supposed to start Dec. 5 in Busan and include stops in Gwangju and Seoul, will be fully refunded. More detailed information about the refunds can be found from the website fans bought the tickets from, such as Interpark or Ticketlink.

The singer previously posted on her social media account in October that she was making the safety of the staff and the audience a top priority, and hoped to see the fans on the scheduled date. Baek Ji-young

South Korean singer

Not to be confused with Baek Ji Yoon or Baek Ji-hoon.

In this Korean name, the family name is Baek.

Musical artist

Baek Ji-young (Korean:&#;백지영; born March 25, ),[1] also known as Baek Z Young,[2] is a South Korean singer. She made her debut in , with the release of her album Sorrow. Over her career she has released eight studio albums and won awards for Best Female Artist and Best OST at the Mnet Asian Music Awards.

Career[edit]

Baek began her music career in , entering the South Korean dance scene with her first album Sorrow. The first single, "선택" (Choice), was one of the first Korean pop songs to feature Latin beats.[3] The single charted well, and Baek quickly followed her debut with a second album, Rouge, which came out in April and sold , copies.

Two years after the release of Tres, Baek released her fourth album Smile in September , which placed 46th for the year. In March , Baek released her fifth album, Smile Again. "사랑 안해" (I Won't Love), her first single from the album, was a ballad, unlike the rest of her Latin-style singles. Although this was a significant change, the song reached the top spot on certain performance show charts.[4] This change was not permanent, as there were many Latin/dance tracks on the album, including single "Ez Do Dance." She performed this single until the end of summer , at which point she finished promotional activities for the album. In November , Baek won Best Female Solo Singer at the MKMF Awards and was nominated for the Overseas Viewer Award.[5]

On September 7, Baek's sixth album, The Sixth Miracle, was released, with the lead single "사랑 하나면 돼" (I Only Need One Love). She won an award for the album at the Seoul Music Awards in January [6]

Fearing she would lose her voice, Baek underwent vocal cord surgery to remove a cyst in February [7]

After recuperating from her surgery, Baek returned with her seventh album, Sensibility, released on November 14, It was reported that she would come back with a dance single to showcase her strengthened voice,[8] but instead came back with "총 맞은 것처럼" (Like Being Hit by a Bullet), a mid-tempo ballad. The single hit No. 1 on various online music sites[9] and hit No. 1 on KBS's music program Music Bank.[10]

On August 9, Baek announced a collaboration with 2PM member Taecyeon for the title track of her mini-album EGO called "내 귀에 캔디" (My Ear Candy).[11] Unlike her previous songs, My Ear Candy is a pop-dance track that includes techno beats. They first performed the song on Kim Jung-eun's Chocolate, although the episode did not air until a week later after her official comeback on Show! Music Core. EGO was released on August 14, On November 21, , Baek won Best Female Solo Artist at Mnet Asian Music Awards.[12]

She collaborated with Mighty Mouth for their comeback single "사랑이 올까요" (Will Love Come), released on March 12, along with a music video. This is her second collaboration with the group; she was previously featured on their mini-album Love Class in the track Miss U, released on August 6, Her single Over Time topped various music charts on the day of its release on July 1, , and Baek's greatest-hits album Timeless: The Best also sold well.[13]

With the success of her eighth album Pitta in , music industry critics found it remarkable for a female singer in her mids to succeed in an industry dominated by teen bands.[14]

Baek has also participated in numerous soundtracks for TV dramas, including Don't Forget for IRIS, Love Is Not a Crime for Ja Myung Go,[15]Love and Love for Arang and the Magistrate,[16] and Spring Rain for Gu Family Book.[17] The most famous thus far has been That Woman from Secret Garden,[18] which won Outstanding Korean Drama OST at the Seoul International Drama Awards.[19] Baek said, "I love to participate in producing music for soaps if I like the female lead after reading the script. It's a thrill to hear my song played during melodramatic moments in soaps."[20] She later released an album in titled Flash Back, a collection of the television drama soundtracks she recorded.[21]

In , Baek announced that she was releasing her first dance album in three years.[22][23] She also became a judge/coach on The Voice of Korea, the local version of reality singing competition The Voice. On May 7, she released a ballad from the mini-album entitled Voice, featuring Gary from Leessang. On the 17th, her Good Boy mini-album was released, including the dance title track of the same name featuring Yong Jun-hyung of B2ST.[24]

On February 16, , Baek held her first solo concert in seven years at the Jamsil Gymnasium in Seoul, followed by a nationwide tour in March.[20][25] She performed for the first time in Japan at a sold-out concert in May.[26][27]

Personal life[edit]

Baek married actor Jung Suk-won on June 2, at the Sheraton Grande Walkerhill.[28][29][30] The couple began dating in ,[31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38] and were expecting their first child.[39][40][41] However, on June 27, , it was confirmed that Baek suffered a miscarriage, four months into her pregnancy.[42][43][44][45] Later, a few years later, on 22 May , the couple's first child, a daughter named Jung Ha-im is born.[46][47]

Controversy[edit]

In , a sex tape featuring Baek and her manager at the time, Kim Shi-won (alias Kim Seok-jin), was leaked onto the internet. The video had been recorded secretly in a hotel room without Baek's knowledge, and was later used to threaten Baek when she attempted to change her contracted manager at the peak of her career.[48][49] The former manager, who fled to the U.S., is currently serving time in a Los Angeles jail for charges of sex with a minor, which he also recorded on video.[50][51] The scandal nearly ruined Baek's career, leading to a five-year absence from the limelight from which she only emerged in [52]

In , after suffering from a high fever and dizziness from the flu and hypotension, Baek stopped a dinner concert midway. After singing her fifth song, she told the audience, "I am very sorry for being on stage despite being sick. I won't be able to continue my performance." Experts speculated that refunds cost Baek and her agency losses of nearly ₩ million (about US$,).[53]

She and a friend, singer Yuri, set up the successful online shopping business IamYuri Mall.[13] Baek withdrew from associating with the brand in after the Fair Trade Commission fined several celebrity-run online shopping malls for posting fake user reviews.[54]

Baek filed suit against a local plastic surgery clinic that had used her photo for online advertising without her permission. On June 24, , the Seoul Central District Court found the clinic guilty of infringing on her rights for profit and awarded Baek damages of ₩5 million (US$4,).[55]
