Use the HP Smart app for computers and mobile devices to print, copy, scan, troubleshoot printer issues, and set up a printer on a wireless network.

Install the HP Smart app and set up the printer

Get the HP Smart app for Android, Apple iOS and iPadOS, Windows 10, and Mac to set up and use your HP printer to print, scan, copy, and to manage settings.

Do the following if you are setting up the printer on a Wi-Fi network.

  • Place the printer and the computer or mobile device near the Wi-Fi router.

  • Turn on Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect to your network. If the computer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect the cable and use the Wi-Fi connection during the setup.

  • Enable Bluetooth on the computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.

  • After installing HP Smart for iOS and Android, enable the mobile device location service and allow the app to use your location to detect the printer and offer solutions during setup.

  1. Download the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com (Android, Apple iOS, iPadOS), HP Smart - Microsoft Store (Windows 10), or HP Smart - Mac App Store.

If you are prompted to sign in with Microsoft to use the app across devices, you can sign in or click No, thanks to continue.

    Note:

Disconnect from a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection before downloading.

  2. If you are setting up HP Smart for the first time, you must create or sign in to an HP account to access all printer functions.

  3. In HP Smart, click Add Printer or the plus sign to search for the printer, and then follow the instructions to complete the setup.

If your printer is not found, continue to the next step.

  4. Restore network default settings on the printer to prepare it for a Wi-Fi connection.

    • Most printers with a touchscreen: From the Wireless or Setup menu, select Network setup or Settings, and then select Restore Network Settings.

    • Most inkjet, Laser NS, and Neverstop printers without a touchscreen: Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons until the Power button flashes, and then wait for the Wireless light to flash.

    • Most LaserJet printers without a touchscreen: Press and hold the Wireless button until the Attention light flashes, and then wait for the Wireless light to flash.

    • Envy 6000, 6000e, 6400e, ENVY Pro 6400, DeskJet Plus IA 6000, 6400, and Tango printers: Press and hold the Wireless button on the back of the printer for five seconds until the Status light flashes (blue or purple depending on the model).

  5. Within two hours, restart the printer, close then re-open HP Smart, and then try adding the printer again.

Use the HP Smart app

Print, scan, and copy by clicking the HP Smart app home screen tiles. You can also check printer status, troubleshoot issues, order supplies, and set printer preferences.

What are the requirements to use the HP Smart app?

Review connection and software version requirements for the HP Smart app.

  • An HP printer that supports HP Smart

  • The printer is connected to a wireless network with internet access

  • A compatible mobile device or computer.

    • Android 7.0 and later

    • Apple iOS 13 and later

    • Windows 10 version 1803 and later

For Windows 10 version 1709 or earlier, download and install HP Easy Start from 123.hp.com.

    • macOS 10.13 and later

For macOS 10.12 or earlier, download and install HP Easy Start from 123.hp.com or set up your printer using Apple AirPrint. Go to HP printer setup (Apple AirPrint for Mac) for more information.

Why do I need to sign in or create an account to use HP Smart?

An HP Smart account allows you to print and scan from the HP Smart app, as well as access to premium features such as mobile fax.

You can also use HP Smart to remotely manage, share access, and print from anywhere with a compatible HP printer.

Why can't I connect my wireless printer or print over the network?

Check network issues and setup requirements if the printer is not found during software installs or when wireless print jobs fail.

  • Poor network connection: Move the printer and computer or mobile device closer to the wireless router, and then check if the signal quality improved. Try opening a website to see if the internet connection is working properly. If Wi-Fi is slow or intermittent, restart the router by disconnecting the power cord, waiting 15 seconds, and then reconnecting the cord.

  • Printer is off or in sleep mode: Touch the control panel menu or press the Power button to wake the printer and put it in a ready state. Sometimes the printer status might display Offline when it is actually ready.

  • Check the printer connection status: Make sure the wireless signal is on, and the printer is connected to the same network as your computer or mobile device. If your printer has a light next to a Wireless icon or button , make sure the light is on. If it is off or blinks the printer is disconnected from the network.

  • Reconnect the printer to the network: Place the printer within range of the Wi-Fi router signal, and then connect it to the network.

    • Printers with a touchscreen control panel: Open the Setup, Network, or Wireless settings menu, select Wireless Setup Wizard, and then follow the instructions to select the network name and enter the password.

    • Printers without a touchscreen control panel: Press and hold the Wireless button for five seconds or until the wireless light starts to flash. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) button on the router until the connection process begins. The printer wireless light stops flashing when the connection completes.

    • HP Deskjet 6000 and 6400, ENVY 6000 and 6400, and Tango printers: Press and hold the Wi-Fi button and the Power button on the back of the printer for five seconds until the blue bar flashes. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS button on the router until the connection process begins. The blue bar stops flashing when the connection completes.

  • Restart devices: Restart the printer and the computer or mobile device to clear possible error conditions.

  • Print a Wireless Test Report: Search the HP Customer Support website for your printer model, and then search for to find the document on how to print and evaluate the report.

  • Enable Bluetooth on your device during printer setup (Android, iOS only): The HP Smart app uses Bluetooth to help locate the printer and set up the wireless connection to the network.

Phone and printer combo is amazing

I just want to say that I think all these apps and new features on these printers are just amazing and I think it makes it easy for people like myself who uses my phone more than I use my laptop I have this really cheap laptop that is very slow and I’m kind of likeWhy should I buy an expensive laptop that I’m barely going to use because I have a printer that I barely use and I go through printers yearly no matter how expensive they are because I would have them sit there and the ink dry out and damage the printer so I only use my printer once or twice a yearSo instead of me rushing to the store to spend money for a decent working laptop I use my phone and print from my phone scan from my phone I mean my head just exploded because I was so excited I was able to scan a document that I need to really quickly and email it right away from my phone and I just think that was just amazing and I’m so happy thank you , thank you keep these new features coming

HP Smart for Mac

The HP smart is a good way to access mobile uses, printer setup settings, and various other useful tools. The software seems to work well. However, the development team seems to have left out a very important function for Apple Mac users that used to be in the old “HP Utility” application before “HP Smart” came around. The printers have a “scan to computer” function where you stand at the printer and load files and press the printers touch screen button to scan the loaded pages directly to a computer. This function can only be turned on to recognize a Mac computer to scan to by turning on the tool under the “HP Utility” scan settings on the computer itself and not through the printers webpage settings. Now that HP Utility is no more and we only have HP Smart this scan to computer setting is missing. There is no longer a way to scan straight from the printer to a Mac. Instead now you have to load the items to scan at the printer and then walk back to the Mac to press the scan button on the HP Smart app and then go back and forth to the printer again to retrieve the hard copy pages. Additionally, I assume an update to the software would be in the works to better support the apple silicon devices. The current version has to run in Rosetta.

Sleek but Awful

I logged in, which all on its own was not the best because multiple times it gave me an error message that was the equivalent of “something went wrong” without any explanation, after struggling with the app for 20min it finally connected at which point the instructions, which are repetitive and clear as mud, were to close the printer door which I did admittedly closed the wrong door and struggled for another 5 minutes. Finally, after going through all that the printer printed the first side of my sheet fine and then proceeded to print some sort of HP tester page on the other side (it held no information by the way) so I reprinted that sheet and moved on to the next which printed the first side fine but for the back side IT PRINTED IN TINY FONT I never figured out why, never changed the settings, never moved anything but the sheets and this happened twice then it printed the sheet right but was missing parts at the bottom so I tried again and yet again it printed in tiny font and then I ended up using 2 sheets of paper which for what ever reason worked and finally finished it up after and hour of struggle (this process started at 9:40 and ended at 11:10). I’ve struggled before with other hp stuff and the customer service are awful and I will NEVER be buying from these people again.
