Dragon Ball: Ranking All of Gokus Forms
Dragon Ball remains among the most iconic anime of all time. Perhaps it is most well known, however, for how seemingly in every fight, when the situation looks most dire, a character unveils some new power-up transformation strong enough to pummel the bad guys to a pulp.
Iconic hero Son Goku has had many forms over the years, from Super Saiyan to Giant Ape. However, not all forms are created equal, and some forms are truly more awe-inspiring than others. This list is not a ranking of the most powerful forms, but the most unforgettable. Which transformations left audiences with their jaws on the floor? Which ones left an impact? From Dragon Ball to Z to GT to Super, which Goku forms were the coolest?

11 Base Goku
Let's start with the basic form. Goku, in his base form, is still a force to be reckoned with. He spent all of Dragon Ball, after all, in this form (with a couple of noticeable exceptions). However, in base form, he is at his lowest level of power.
While iconic, Base Goku often discounts this form in order to transform into something far more super.
10 Super Saiyan 2
Gohan's transformation into a Super Saiyan 2 is one of the most iconic moments in Dragon Ball Z history. But by the time Goku entered the form, it had already become old-hat. He only spends one real fight employing the form -- against Majin Vegeta.
However, by the time Goku could transform into Super Saiyan 2, he had already unlocked the power of Super Saiyan 3, making this form obsolete.
9 Golden Great Ape
The Golden Great Ape is a second transformation that appears only in Dragon Ball GT. While Baby Vegeta's Golden Great Ape transformation is more iconic, Goku's was equally important. Goku transforms into the Golden Great Ape when staring into the sight of a full Earth/full moon.
Only when Pan helps Goku regain his senses can he take command of this powerful form, entering into the legendary Super Saiyan 4 form. It's a nice throw-back to the pre-Super Saiyan era of transformations.
8 Ultra Instinct
Ultra Instinct is undeniably the most powerful form Goku has ever taken. However, by the time Goku went Ultra Instinct, many fans felt burned out by all the new forms.

That isn't to say Goku's final battle with Jiren, where he transforms into his Ultra Instinct form, is anything less than stellar. As the ultimate finale of the Universal Survival arc, it is nothing short of epic. But is it more memorable than the prior forms Goku takes? On this list, not so much.
7 Great Ape
The Great Ape form is Goku's first transformation in Dragon Ball, taking place only a dozen episodes in. When Goku's tail is exposed to the light of a Full Moon, he transforms into a gigantic, uncontrollable Ape. With ten times as much strength as usual, he is a destructive, chaotic force.
The Great Ape form is a terrific force to be reckoned with, but Goku is completely unable to control himself during this form. There's a reason Goku doesn't willingly transform into a Great Ape like his rival Vegeta. That and without a tail, you can't transform.
6 Super Saiyan 4
Dragon Ball GT gets a lot of hate from fans for being more than a little silly. However, Goku's Super Saiyan 4 form is arguably one of the coolest things to ever come out of the series.
Unlike every other transformation to this point, Goku's hair remains jet black, but a red coat of fur sprouts all over his body. He goes from his child form to his adult form, sporting an incredibly cool, coarser voice. The only underwhelming part about Super Saiyan 4 Goku, however, is that it is no longer canon.
5 Super Saiyan God
Perhaps the hardest form for a Saiyan to achieve, Goku's Super Saiyan God form allowed him to match the strength of the legendary God of Destruction himself, Beerus. Only achievable thanks to the unification of pure-hearted Saiyans, Goku's sheer strength in this form is enough to bend the fabric of reality to the breaking point. One transformation permanently empowers a Saiyan beyond all prior limitations.
Super Saiyan God form is rarely seen after the initial fight with Beerus but does make a reappearance when Broly comes knocking.
For a while, this was Goku's peak power. The Kaio-Ken technique multiplies the user's power by a given factor, but, in turn, puts an incredible strain on the fighter's body. Most notably, Goku used this technique in his iconic beam struggle with Vegeta during the Saiyan Saga. The coolest part about Kaio-Ken is the incredible strain it puts on the user. Unlike most transformations, its weakness is what makes every fight that employs it all the more incredible.

However, following reaching Kaio-Ken x20 against Frieza, the form was mostly retired in favor of Goku's Super Saiyan form. However, there were periods later on where Goku would employ the Kaio-Ken in conjunction with his Super Saiyan forms.
3 Super Saiyan 3
Super Saiyan 3 is the Goku transformation that literally rocked an entire planet. It is also the point where Goku's forms became increasingly ridiculous. Golden hair? Sure. Lightning bolts around your body? We can handle that.
Losing your eyebrows and growing waist-long hair? Gaining enough power to literally break cities apart?
Super Saiyan 3 remains at once Goku's most ridiculous and incredibly cool transformation. It started a real trend for Goku finding a new transformation every arc or two. And the initial transformation remains arguably the most iconic moment of the entire Buu Saga.
2 Super Saiyan Blue
Super Saiyan Blue -- or Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, if you're not into breathing as you speak -- takes things back to a simpler time. Less complicated than other high-level transformations, Super Saiyan Blue looks much like the Super Saiyan transformation, only with new blue hair.

First used by Goku against Golden Frieza, it immediately became the iconic transformation of Dragon Ball Super. For modern fans, it is the pinnacle. Simple. Powerful. Incredibly cool. Arguably, no other form Goku has ever taken remains as iconic as this one. Except for one
1 Super Saiyan
The classic. Goku's initial transformation into a Super Saiyan remains for many a high-point of Dragon Ball Z. Frieza pushed Goku a little too far by killing Krillin, which triggered this legendary transformation. At a time where transformations weren't a regular occurrence, the weight of this moment shifted the balance of everything to come in Dragon Ball.
But to make matters more interesting, the Super Saiyan form was played with throughout the entire Android Saga. Goku's decision to make Super Saiyan his base form helped shift Goku's powers to a whole new level, leading to one of the greatest, most iconic fights in the series: Goku vs Cell. Even after his initial transformation, there are several classic moments where Goku transformed into a Super Saiyan fans simply cannot forget, such as when Goku went Super Saiyan in his fight against Cooler, using his aura to resurrect a dying bird.
Undeniably, this is Goku's most iconic form.

All Goku Forms, From Weakest to Strongest
All of Goku’s Forms from Weakest to Strongest
Goku is the poster boy of the Dragon Ball franchise, and the strongest there is. Over the past 30+ years of the series, Goku has taken on dozens of forms. By surpassing his limits and growing stronger as a fighter, he has shown us that there is always room to grow and improve.
Be it a shapeshifting pig, a Saiyan Prince, or even a God of Destruction; he overcomes every new opponent that stands before him, never backing down. From every series, game, and spin-off Goku has taken many different and exciting forms. In this list, however, we’re going to focus on all of Goku’s canon forms from weakest to strongest.
We are starting our list with the Goku that started it all, Kid-Goku. We are first introduced to him at the very beginning of his martial arts journey, so this is the weakest form of Goku. Granted, his Saiyan biology gives him a natural talent in combat as well as boosts in power occurring after surviving brushes with death.
He learned the Kamehameha minutes after watching Master Roshi, which took him 50+ years to perfect, mind you. It makes me wonder; do you think Goku received a Zenkai boost when he hit his head as a baby?
He was able to take bullets to the head, destroy tanks with ease, defeat creatures dwarfing him in size (he was already a pretty short kid) and completely demolishing an entire army single-handedly by the time he was It makes you ponder these kinds of things. This might’ve been Goku’s weakest form, but he was far from weak.
Great Ape (Oozaru) Goku
The Great Ape is one of Kid-Goku’s stronger forms but is a form he has only ever used twice. Both times were by accident. He first transformed into The Great Ape after he looked at the Full Moon in the cell Pilaf trapped he and his friends in. He transformed from Kid-Goku completely, leveling Pilaf’s castle with no effort.
Consequently, he had no control over the form. It took Yamcha and Puar cutting off his tail to change him back. Goku’s second time transforming was during the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament. During his fight with Jackie Chun, he transforms and begins destroying the stadium. It wasn’t until Jackie Chun destroyed the Moon that Goku reverted to normal.
In Saiyan Biology, Saiyans transform into The Great Ape form under the Full Moon. This form grants them immense power without hindering their movement speed. The downside to this is that only Saiyan Elites retain their sentience in this form, being able to truly harness its power, while lower-class Saiyans lose all sense of self. This form itself might be strong, but with no control or skill to harness it, it remains pretty weak.
Ultra-Divine Water Goku
Too weak to fight King Piccolo in his current state, Goku saught out Korin for help. Korin proceeded to tell Goku about the water and its potential unlocking properties. Six hours after drinking the water (manga), he writhed in pain and agony as the venom coursed through his body.
Finally overcoming the poison, Goku’s potential was unlocked. This hinted that he could be as strong as his Great Ape form without transforming. He potentially could have received a Zenkai boost as the waters poisonous properties nearly killed him (Saiyan Physiology am I right?). In this form, Goku was able to defeat King Piccolo and avenge his friend and master.
Next, we have Teen Goku. After defeating King Piccolo, Goku trains in The Lookout with Kami for three years to prepare for his fight against Piccolo Jr. in the 23rd Martial Arts Tournament. Now 18,
Goku has retained all the power he had acquired before training with Kami. By this point, he had gotten fairly strong: learning how to fly, being strong enough to defeat both Piccolo Jr. and Annin, all before Dragon Ball’s Conclusion.
Transitioning into DBZ (which takes place four years after Dragon Ball) now 23 years old, Goku is an adult with a wife and son. His strength had increased in those four years, but he had neglected his training after becoming the world’s strongest and focused more on his family.
Becoming complacent came back to bite him where his tail used to be when Raditz arrived at the start of the Saiyan Arc. Goku’s fight with Raditz made him realize once again that there is always someone stronger. Along with the expansion of the series universe into space, Goku’s pursuit of power was kicked into overdrive.
9. Kaio-Ken Goku
After Goku died and traveled along Snake Way to train with King Kai, Goku learned the Kaio-ken technique along with several others. This increased his power exponentially. However, this form does take out a massive toll on the user rendering their body useless after extended use.
In this form, he was able to battle on par with Vegeta matching his power. As well as disorienting a Final Form Frieza, and increasing his limit to Kaio-ken x This form is a good last resort, but crippling the body after use does more harm than good.
8. Super Saiyan Goku
For 1, years the myth of The Legendary Super Saiyan stayed just that, a myth. Until Goku achieved the form after witnessing the death of Krillin at the hands of Frieza. In this form, his power skyrockets being able to square up against a fully powered Frieza (and mop him).
He even gave Android 19 a run for his money before the heart disease kicked it. While this form is incredibly strong it does have some drawbacks, such as consuming large amounts of stamina. In contrast, it’s boost far exceeds that of the Kaio-ken form, with fewer consequences.
7. Mastered Super Saiyan Goku
Goku realized while in preparation to fight Cell, and the Androids, that Super Saiyan was not enough. Using the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, he and Gohan trained to harness the full power of Super Saiyan; instead of trying to power-up like Vegeta and Trunks. After one day (one year) inside the chamber, Goku mastered Super Saiyan suffering no power or stamina loss. This effectively made it his base form and allowed him to overcome even greater feats through it.
What makes this form strong is that unlike Grade 2 (Ascended) and Grade 3 (Ultra), is that those forms of Super Saiyan consume a large amount of the users’ stamina. What they might see in a power increase will be a great negative effect to speed rendering it useless in a fight. Goku became stronger than both grades simply by mastering it, receiving all the boosts without any of the consequences.
6. Super Saiyan 2 Goku
Goku spent 7 years in Other World after his death during the Cell Games. It is only natural that Goku spent his time training, and for the 25th Budokai, no less. Super Saiyan 2 is a large boost in power from Mastered Super Saiyan.
It is enough for Goku to be an even match with Majin Vegeta, but nowhere near strong enough to beat Majin Buu. Impressive to say the least.
5. Super Saiyan 3 Goku
Unveiled during the Majin Buu Saga, Goku kept this form hidden from Majin Vegeta during their fight. Realizing that Majin Buu was too dangerous to keep roaming around, he had to stall him before he could teach Goten and Trunks the Fusion Dance. This form has more of a visual difference than the previous form of Super Saiyan, with long glowing spikey golden hair extended all the way down to Goku’s legs.
This form was strong enough to take on Majin Buu, but the drawbacks are too great as it is incredibly unstable. Drawing too much stamina and Ki from Goku, he was only able to use it at the time because he was dead, even then it was giving him trouble. This is because the more he used it the shorter it would make his time on earth. As strong as this form might be, the drawbacks are crazy.
4. Super Saiyan God Goku
Next, we have Super Saiyan God. This form is the turning point in the franchise from Ki, to God Ki. With Super Saiyan 3 being too weak to take on Beerus, Goku needed something even stronger to take on the God of Destruction.
In this form, Goku was able to go toe-to-toe with Beerus using 70% of his power (in the movie). He was also able to hold his own against Broly for a bit before Broly adapted and overpowered him. There is a catch, however, to receive this form the user must either perform a ritual with 5 other good-hearted Saiyans or go through divine training to achieve God Ki.
Surrounded by a fiery red aura, the skin turns a pinkish color, and hair maintains its normal style while becoming more refined and turning a magenta kind of red, Super Saiyan God is one of the most visually appealing forms Goku has had to date.
3. Super Saiyan Blue
Introduced in Resurrection F, next up we have Super Saiyan Blue (Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan). Mixing Super Saiyan Ki and God Ki perfectly achieves this form.
There isn’t much else to say about this form as it’s just Super Saiyan on literal God Mode. It can go blow-for-blow with most of Dragon Ball Super’s baddies and get the job done.
2. Ultra Instinct -Sign- Goku
As we are closing in, next, we have the first phase in Ultra Instinct. This is Goku’s most recent form showcased in the Tournament of Power Arc. At the brink of death, Goku was able to use this form giving him immeasurable power nearly on par with Whis.
Unfortunately, Ultra Instinct -Sign- has its major flaws. In such an imperfect state, it lasts only 1 minute. It takes insane amounts of concentration, does little damage, and it can only be used when the user is virtually unconscious. After doing it, Goku spent the rest of the ToP trying to master it.
1. Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku
Finally, the strongest form on this list is the Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku. This is easily Goku’s strongest form in the entire franchise so far. His power puts him in the same category as Whis and Beerus. He mops the floor with Jirn in this form completely turning the tides of the battle.
Much like when Goku masters any of his forms, Mastered Ultra Instinct has all the insane power of -Sign- but with practically no drawbacks. The only one is that it eats away at his body after extended use. Even with that slight drawback, the form is so strong Goku nearly achieved victory against Jiren with great ease if not for the time limit.
That concludes all of Goku’s canon forms, from weakest to strongest. The reason I went with his canon forms is that collectively from spin-offs, games, manga, and anime, Goku has over 30 forms. Toei likes to give Goku forms that he’ll never use again, for some reason.
Also, the manga and anime are two different timelines with their canon since Akira Toriyama doesn’t want to reveal which one is the true canon (f**king confusing I know). I am also aware that I did not include the fusions as they aren’t technically Goku or Vegeta (since fusions create an entirely new warrior).
Well, that wraps it up! I hope you enjoyed the read as much as I did writing it. Maybe you agree with me, or maybe you don’t. That’s the best part about these types of things, as they spark discussions amongst the community. My name is Sym, and I will catch you guys later, stay you!

Dragon Ball: Gokus 20 Most Powerful Transformations
Son Goku is one of the most recognizable characters in anime, which is all the more remarkable considering that he has at least 21 different forms to recognize. We’re looking at all of his transformations (so his base form is off the table) that we could find, and ranking them on their estimated power levels. Though we are trying to base this on what we see and hear in the various Dragon Ball sagas, the supposed power multipliers may come into play on occasion.
It should be said that this will be guesswork for the most part, so be sure to take this list with a pinch of salt. Goku’s power level beyond the Frieza saga of Dragon Ball Z is pretty much off the charts, and we are including non-canon entries just to make things a little bit harder. That means that Dragon Ball GT and the DBZ movies will be considered, along with Akira Toriyama’s official Dragon Ball canon.
Here are Goku’s 20 Most Powerful Transformations.
20 Great Ape
Back in the days of Saiyan tails, Goku had the unfortunate ability to turn into a Great Ape at the sight of a full moon. The resulting power-up was so vast that the Saiyans were able to easily overpower the entire Tuffle race on planet Vegeta, while Goku was no match for Great Ape Vegeta, even with the Kaio-ken boost. Gohan has also transformed into a Great Ape in Dragon Ball Z, before Toriyama straight-up forgot Great Apes existed.
The transformation is outright stated to multiply a Saiyan’s power tenfold. The form is utilized to devastating effect in Dragon Ball, and remains the strongest transformation in the entire original series, but a multiplier of 10 is by far the weakest of Goku’s later power-ups. What’s more, Vegeta actually commanded a much greater control over the form than Goku ever did, maintaining his speed and actually being able to speak while transformed.
The Kaio-ken technique is introduced early on in Dragon Ball Z, with Goku first using the transformation to go up against Vegeta. The form multiplies the user’s power by a very specific amount, and so this is a transformation where multipliers definitely have to be taken into account. The most powerful Kaio-ken power-up Goku ever attempted on its own (so without Super Saiyan or another such transformation) is 20 times his base form.
Any higher and Goku would essentially have shut down, as the form puts more and more stress on the user’s body with each power-up. Goku only stretches to Kaio-ken x20 out of desperation during his battle with Frieza on Namek, at which point he is still heavily overpowered. If Kaio-ken x20 is the highest form base-Goku can reach, the transformation is ultimately useless when compared to the various Super Saiyan forms-- not to mention that it actually has more drawbacks. However, Goku is still finding effective ways to utilize the Kaio-ken, but more on that later.
We’re not including video game fusions, or the hypothetical fusion between Goku and Mr. Satan (as imagined by Goku in the Buu saga) on this list. But since we are including movie transformations, we’ll just go ahead and include the result of Goku and Vegeta’s failed first attempt at the fusion technique. Veku, as named by South Kai, appears in the movie Fusion Reborn, when Vegeta botches the fusion dance as he and Goku battle Janemba. What should have resulted in the birth of Gogeta instead forms a short obese man with next-to-no skills in combat.
Veku is unable to perform techniques Goku and Vegeta could easily pull off separately, such as flight or even a simple ki blast. He resorts to running away from Janemba, with a move he refers to as the “Rabbit Feet” technique.
Veku is essentially useless. The only reason he isn’t the lowest-ranked of Goku’s transformations is that he somehow manages to not be killed by Janemba, whose power is such that it eventually takes Super Gogeta to bring him down.
17 False Super Saiyan
Goku transforms into this pseudo Super Saiyan state near the end of the movie Lord Slug, during his battle with the titular villain. Similar to the Super Saiyan transformation, the False Super Saiyan form emits a golden aura, but Goku keeps his black hair and his eyes gloss over entirely. Supposedly, this is because Toei Animation heard rumors of a Super Saiyan transformation, and tried to beat Toriyama to the punch without knowing what it would look like.
The result is a confusing transformation that never reappears in any Dragon Ball continuity, and so it’s impossible to gauge its true power. We can safely assume that it’s somewhere close to Super Saiyan, given that it was originally referred to as the Super Saiyan form. This puts it above Kaio-ken, since Goku had access to the technique in Lord Slug, but still needed the False Super Saiyan transformation to defeat the evil Namekian. But we’re ranking it one below the real thing (spoilers), just based on the fact that we don’t really know its limits.
16 Super Saiyan
The first appearance of the true Super Saiyan form is the most iconic of Goku’s transformations, and was the most powerful we had ever seen from a single character at the time. The transformation comes when a Saiyan who has reached the peak of his current state experiences a moment of equal anger and purity. Incidentally, this is why the half-breeds generally have more potential than their pure Saiyans fathers; they have a greater capacity for emotion from their human side.
Unfortunately, Goku has reached levels far beyond this initial Super Saiyan form by now, but the transformation still features regularly in Dragon Ball Super. Goku mastered the form during his training with Gohan in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and so he can maintain the Super Saiyan state without losing any energy at all. This essentially makes it just as beneficial as his base form, but with an estimated 50 times the power.
15 Spirit Bomb Absorbed
We move on now to another entry specific to the movies. We are of course referring to, uh… Spirit Bomb Goku? Spirit Saiyan? Super Saiyan Ultimate Spirit Bomb Infused Mega Goku? The truth is the form doesn’t have a name, nor does it make any sense at all. We’re going with Spirit Bomb Absorbed Goku, although that last one is infinitely cooler.
The movie in question is Super Android 13!, at the end of which Goku resorts to using the Spirit Bomb. When the technique is fully charged, however, Goku attempts to turn into a Super Saiyan, but passes out due to the imbalance of a pure Spirit Bomb and impure Saiyan heart. Luckily, Goku wakes up to find he has absorbed the attack. Spirit Bomb Absorbed Goku is able to easily destroy Android 13, estimated to be on par with Semi-Perfect Cell, so we’re placing this one somewhere between Super Saiyans 1 and 2.
14 Ascended Saiyan
More commonly known as the Ultra Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan Third Grade, the Ascended Super Saiyan state recurs through the Android and Cell sagas, although Goku is seen using it for only a brief moment. Future Trunks is best known for using the form during his fight with Perfect Cell. The transformation increases Trunks’ muscle mass beyond practicality, which is exactly why Goku and Vegeta (both listed users of the form) never even consider it an option.
As explained by both Goku and Cell, the Ultra Super Saiyan is twice as powerful as the generic Super Saiyan, but its unnecessarily large physique severely limits movement. It can therefore be estimated at roughly equivalent in power to a Super Saiyan 2, but it renders Trunks unable to land a blow on Cell. Gohan is the first to master the Ascended Saiyan transformation, which these days is referred to as Super Saiyan 2.
13 Super Kaio-ken
The Super Kaio-ken transformation is Goku’s first attempt to combine his Super Saiyan state with the Kaio-ken technique. The form debuts during the tournament on Other World, which sees Goku face off against Pikkon. Statistically, the Kaio-ken bonus would double the power of a Super Saiyan, so Goku should theoretically have exactly the same power as if he were a Super Saiyan 2. Where the transformation differs from Super Saiyan 2 is, again, in its drawbacks.
The trouble is that Goku is dead when he uses the technique, having been allowed to keep his body following his sacrifice at the Cell Games. Goku states that his living body would not have been able to handle the transformation, due to the immense ki control required to maintain the power-up. Even his dead body struggles to master the form, which expires relatively quickly, leaving Goku and Pikkon on an even playing field once more.
12 Super Saiyan 2
Super Saiyan 2 doubles a Super Saiyan’s power and speed, therefore multiplying his base state by Gohan is the first to reach Super Saiyan 2, though it isn't named as such until well into the Buu saga, as Goku travels up to Super Saiyan 3. The issue with the second Super Saiyan stage is that Super Saiyan 3 comes so soon after that it does little damage beyond the Cell saga.
Goku and Vegeta debut their Super Saiyan 2 forms during their long-awaited rematch, where they supply between them enough energy for Majin Buu to hatch, but Goku had Super Saiyan 3 up his sleeve the whole time. The only meaningful uses of Super Saiyan 2 are Gohan’s victories over Cell and Bojack. Rarely do we see Goku use it at all, given that he pretty much transformed from Super Saiyan straight to Super Saiyan 3, which somewhat lessens the impact of this form.
11 Super Saiyan 3
Given that Goku first transforms into a Super Saiyan 2 and a Super Saiyan 3 within literal seconds of each other, there is nothing to really separate them on this list. Of course, Super Saiyan 3 is the far more powerful transformation, at roughly four times that of a Super Saiyan 2 (base form x), but it also drains energy at a much faster rate and should only be used in extreme circumstances.
Super Saiyan 3 Goku is second only to Ultimate Gohan as the most powerful non-fused Z Fighter in all of Dragon Ball Z. The transformation itself is the first to have a truly planet-wide impact, while the form is just about able to match Kid Buu blow for blow (where Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta is heavily outmatched). Unfortunately, the energy drain is so extensive that the transformation eventually runs out, and Vegeta has to step in as Goku recharges. A powerful transformation for sure, but none too reliable.
It’s around this point that the power levels in the series start to get absurdly inconsistent, so we’re pretty much resorting to educated guesses from here on out. We start with Vegito, first seen in the Buu saga as the result of Goku and Vegeta’s Potara fusion, which is suggested to multiply their power levels rather than simply combine them. The character is the only one of their fused forms to appear in canon, which makes it tricky to compare Vegito to Gogeta, but we'll get to that.
In his base form, Vegito is more than a match for Gohan-absorbed Super Buu, even after he is turned into an actual candy. This puts him way beyond a Super Saiyan 3, and somewhere near level with Super Saiyan 4 (although this one could go either way). We’re giving Super Saiyan 4 the advantage on the grounds that Buu was able to give base Vegito enough trouble to force him into turning Super Saiyan, while Super Saiyan 4 deals with foes far superior to Buu.
9 Golden Great Ape
Dragon Ball GT finally gets a look in now, with the Golden Great Ape transformation. The form is achieved when Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan while in his Great Ape state. The result is in the name, and the potential multipliers for the Golden Great Ape are off the charts. All we can really know for sure is that Goku, who could have turned Super Saiyan 3 at this point, needed this transformation to overpower Baby. The only problem was that even Goku had trouble controlling its destructive power.
This actually supports a pretty convincing theory that the Golden Great Ape was the form Vegeta referred to as "the legendary Super Saiyan" in Dragon Ball Z. Vegeta mentions that the original Super Saiyan (seen only in outline but resembling an ape) had an overwhelming lust for destruction, but we know that a regular Super Saiyan retains his mind. The Dragon Ball GT Perfect Files suggests: “There was a form where even Goku became extremely violent! Surely this brutality, destructive power are a sign of the legend that tells they will love destruction and slaughter! One can think of the Golden Oozaru form as the true Super Saiyan!”
8 Super Saiyan 4
Super Saiyan 4 is the result of a Golden Great Ape regaining control over his own mind. As in the case with Goku, he is calmed by Pan’s efforts to get through to him, and descends (only in size) to the next level of Super Saiyan. The Super Saiyan 4 differs in appearance from its predecessors. The hair reverts to black, while the tail and part of the body is covered in various shades of red fur.
The transformation retains pretty much exactly the same power as a Golden Great Ape, but focuses the mind, allowing Goku to fully utilize the power. The exact multiplier for the transformation is unknown, but Goku and Vegeta are able to use advanced versions of the Super Kamehameha and Final Flash techniques, which are far beyond Super Saiyan 3.
Incidentally, during the initial Super Saiyan 3 transformation in DBZ, Goku sees a vision of himself transforming from a Great Ape into a monkey-like man with black hair. GT is not considered part of the Dragon Ball continuity, but it does at least take direct inspiration from Dragon Ball Z canon.
7 Super Gogeta
When Goku and Vegeta finally perfect the fusion dance in Fusion Reborn, Gogeta makes his debut already as a Super Saiyan. He also appears in Dragon Ball GT, but only as a Super Saiyan 4. The point is that we never see Gogeta in any kind of base form, so Gogeta alone does not make the cut, and we move right along to Super Gogeta.
The only time we see Super Gogeta in action is during his battle with Janemba. Super Saiyan 3 Goku declares the villain to be the strongest he’s ever faced, with the timeline placement being somewhere in the midst of the Fat Buu saga. Therefore, we can tentatively confirm that Janemba is beyond original Buu.
Gogeta doesn’t even flinch at a full-power punch to the face from Janemba, eventually defeating him effortlessly. As this is all we have to go on, we’re assuming that Janemba is in the lower region of Super Gogeta’s potential, and that he would surely be a match for the villains of GT.
6 Super Vegito
Ranking Vegito below Super Saiyan 4 Goku was always going to cause problems, but multiply the fusion by 50, and you have the strongest character to ever appear in Dragon Ball Z. Super Vegito faces off against the strongest version of Buu, taking zero damage and only allowing himself to be absorbed so as to free his friends and family from inside Buu.
If Super Buu is that much stronger than Fat Buu, chances are he’s right there with Janemba, which doesn’t help us out in the slightest. Chances are we will never know whether Gogeta or Vegito would win in a fight, although fans all over the Internet continue the debate to this day.
The reason we’re inclined to favor the Potara fusion is twofold: the fusion dance necessitates that both subjects be at exactly the same power level, usually rendering one participant below their fullest potential and therefore limiting the fusion. Second, the Potara is not supposed to have a time limit, while the fusion dance gives the subjects just a half-hour to get the job done.
5 Super Saiyan God
The Super Saiyan God transformation is exclusive to Battle of Gods in the anime, although Goku is able to tap into its power at will in the manga. Goku battles Hit in his original red-haired God form, before “powering up” to Super Saiyan Blue, so we can put an end to the debate as to which transformation is more powerful. In the same volume, Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta at just 10% power is stated to be equal to Super Saiyan God Goku at full power.
The God form also has a time limit, which is hardly ideal when battling a God of Destruction for the fate of your world, but it does have its benefits. God Goku can actually regenerate, and only other deities can sense his power. Goku also suggests that even if he and Vegeta had fused, they would have been no match for Beerus, and so the Super Saiyan God just makes the top five ahead of the Super fusions.
4 Super Saiyan Blue
Super Saiyan Blue can be a difficult transformation to get your head around, but taking into account the form’s original name – Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan – it becomes a little easier to work out. Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue transformation combines his leftover God ki (from the Super Saiyan God form) with a Super Saiyan power-up, effectively increasing the original God form's strength by the Super Saiyan multiplier of
As the title suggests, the transformation leaves Goku with blue hair and eyes, while Goku Black’s version of the form – Super Saiyan Rosé – turns his hair a shade of pink. Besides fusions and a further combination of power-ups, this is the strongest single transformation Goku has at his disposal through Dragon Ball Super.
Its power is actually harder to determine without a stronger form to compare it against. Super Saiyan Blue Goku is still not considered a match for Beerus, but the God of Destruction is visibly taken aback by the transformation.
3 Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta
In the final arc of Dragon Ball GT, Goku and Vegeta, outmatched as regular Super Saiyan 4s, are forced into fusion as they attempt to defeat the evil Omega Shenron. As evidenced by the fact that the fusion massively overpowers Omega, it is far more likely that it once again multiplies the duo’s power levels.
But with the massive upgrade in power, as with all Super Saiyan transformations, comes even greater arrogance. With Gogeta being the strongest character in GT, and Super Saiyan 4 being the pinnacle Super Saiyan form (at the time), Gogeta is literally the definition of overconfident, choosing to taunt his opponent rather than finish him off.
Gogeta displays an incredible set of powers, including an unprecedented Big Bang Kamehameha, but the form runs out before he can finish showboating. Gogeta remains by far the most powerful of Goku’s GT transformations (and all non-canon transformations) – at least when he’s done cracking jokes.
2 Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken
We had a hard time believing that Goku on his own could ever match Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, but the combination of Super Saiyan Blue and x10 Kaio-ken might just do the trick. Considering how much stronger Super Saiyan Blue is than Super Saiyan 4, we have enough evidence that a Kaio-ken multiplier of 10 is more than a match for Gogeta’s maximum.
Goku debuts the transformation at Beerus and Champa’s Multiverse Tournament, during his final round match up with Hit. The assassin’s time-stop ability had swiftly overpowered Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta, but Goku is eventually able to withstand the technique with the assistance of Kaio-ken.
Ultimately, nothing that Gogeta achieves comes close to mastering time, and we’re confident that Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken would also be more than a match for Omega Shenron. Omega’s power is statistically only 10x that of a regular Super Saiyan 4, where Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken is 10x more powerful than a Super Saiyan Blue. Still with us?
1 Vegito Blue
Vegito briefly reappears in the recent Future Trunks arc of Dragon Ball Super, as Goku and Vegeta travel to Trunks’ timeline to take on Zamasu and Goku Black. When the two Zamasus fuse together, Goku and Vegeta follow suit, after the Supreme Kai of Universe 10 conveniently tells them that non-Kais will only remain fused for an hour.
Vegito Blue, as named by Vegito himself, runs out of time long before the hour mark. He actually uses up too much power to sustain the form after one of the most savage assaults on any Dragon Ball villain to date, which includes a one-off Final Kamehameha attack. It might not be convenient in a fight to the death, but its pure power is unrivaled.
The latest version of Vegito multiplies the power of two Super Saiyan Blues. Not only that, but Goku and Vegeta each eat a senzu bean beforehand, and the benefits of Potara fusion means that the pair comes together at peak strength. We’re not even going to try and work out Vegito Blue’s power level, but rest assured that it’s Goku’s most powerful transformation by far.

Dragon Ball is undoubtedly one of the most popular and well-loved anime and manga series of all time. It was one of the pioneer shows that make anime popular in every available corner of the world. There have been many reasons that were used to explain the seemingly unbelievable popularity that Dragon Ball has, from interesting character developments to incredible storyline. However, the most used reasoning is, in fact, their power level, as at the time it was the very first fighting anime that has its main characters having so much power. That’s not all though, there is also the fact it is the only one that started the trend of having the show’s main characters undergoing multiple transformations to get even more power than before.
We all know who Son Goku is. He is the main character of the Dragon Ball franchise and the undoubted most powerful character in the whole story. He has trademarked his own transformation signs: the changing of his hair color. During the course of the Dragon Ball series, Goku has experienced so many transformations to get more power that even some hardcore fans have difficulties remembering the exact number of his transformations and how important each of them is. Thus, as a self-proclaimed greatest Dragon Ball fan, I have decided to do you all a favor and put together this list of Goku’s forms and transformations as of
The very first form of the legendary Super Saiyan, the strongest fighter of Universe 7 started out as this small and frail baby with a pitifully low power level of 2. This power level is relative to what a human baby has at birth and so low compared to the other Saiyan babies that Goku’s future was immediately branded as a “low level” fighter. The things that happened next I am sure you all know about, Goku was sent to the Earth, the Saiyans were almost completely wiped out of existence, Goku was found by Granpa Gohan, lost his memories and became the naive and kind Son Goku we all know and love at the start of the Dragon Ball series.
This form is the one that has the least amount of appearances out of all the forms the legendary Super Saiyan Son Goku has turned into throughout the whole Dragon Ball series. While its power level is measly when compared with all the other forms, it is one of the most important forms as this is what Son Goku is original. No matter how strong he would become in the future, we all know that he started out as a baby so frail he was branded as a low-level warrior, which has been proven wrong continuously throughout the series.
2. 12 Years Old
This is the main form that Son Goku was in throughout the first Dragon Ball series, from the moment he was introduced up to the first major time skip in the original Dragon Ball. In this form, Goku had his very first adventures with Bulma to try to collect all the seven Dragon Balls that can summon the legendary dragon Shenron to grant the summoner any one wish. He was stronger than most human fighters, only losing to the most powerful foes like Taopaipai.
3. Great Ape
This is the very first true transformation that Goku went through. It is the most common transformation for any Saiyan who has a tail, as this form is what any Saiyan with a tail turns into when they absorb enough blutz wave. In Son Gokus case, he absorbs blutz wave from looking into a full moon. In this form, the dormant Saiyan traits that Son Goku lost when he lost his memories would reemerge, making him quite violent and feral. In addition to him losing his temper and reasoning, Son Goku while in the Great Ape form would receive a 10 fold increase to his power, the ability to generate really powerful blasts from his mouth.
The only way to stop a Saiyan that has transformed into a Great Ape is to cut down their tail, as what the Earth people have done multiple times to stop Son Goku. After his tail was cut down by Kami while the latter was trying to restore the moon to its original shape, Goku had completely lost the ability to transform into this Great Ape form and become harmless again as he no longer let his tail grew again.
4. Pseudo Super Saiyan
This is the first time the legendary Super Saiyan form showed its tip of the iceberg. Son Goku was able to get this form while was trying to fight Lord Slug. Before transforming, Son Goku would release a huge amount of power and become a pseudo form of the much loved Super Saiyan form he would get further down the line. In this form, Son Goku looks quite similar to how he looks when using the Kaio-ken form with the exception of his body getting bulkier and his eye becomes whited out. One special aspect of the form is the fact that his hair would stand up.
5. Super Saiyan
I believe this form is what all the Dragon Ball Z fans will think of the moment they are asked what kinds of transformation Son Goku has undergone. This is what boosts Dragon Ball’s previous popular status into one of the most recognized anime series in the history of anime. In this legendary Super Saiyan form, Son Goku would receive an increase in power that is 50 times the power level that he possesses before he undergoes the transformation. The Super Saiyan was finally accessible to Son Goku when Frieza killed Krillin and Goku went into a rage. This form is one of the most popular transformations throughout of anime’s history.
In the Super Saiyan form, Son Goku would receive a slight increase in height. In addition, his skin would turn a little lighter while his eyes would turn sterner noticeably with much more defined green pupils. Furthermore, his hair would all stand up vertically and turn into a blond color. There are also some electrical sparks that only appears in the anime. Son Goku’s personality would also change while using this transformation to be a lot more irritable and aggressive.
6. Super Saiyan 2
This form is attained after Son Goku spent some time in the Other World after the defeat of Cell. While using the Super Saiyan 2 transformation, Goku’s hair would grow spikier and longer than what they were like in the base Super Saiyan form. His muscles would also become a lot more defined. His power level would be multiplied by times.
7. Super Saiyan 3
The single most powerful form that Son Goku can transform into in the original manga/anime. After years of training in the Other World, Son Goku was able to attain this form that can be put an unlimited amount of energy into. When using this form, Son Goku’s power level is multiplied by times what he has before the transformation. The most defining feature of this form is Goku’s hair growing to his thighs.
8. Super Saiyan God
This form is the main focus of the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, being the one that piques the God of Destruction Beerus’s interest. After a long sleep and learning of Frieza defeat in the hands of a Super Saiyan, Beerus proceeded to come to Earth and force Son Goku and his friends to give him the legendary Super Saiyan God. After receiving help from the other five Saiyans, Son Goku was finally able to attain this legendary form. In this form, Son Goku has a power level that far surpasses what he has when he was in the Super Saiyan 3 form. His appearance also receives an upgrade with a slimmer body, darker skin tone, red irises, red hair that is not as spiky as the other Super Saiyan forms.
9. Super Saiyan Blue
This form was attained after Son Goku tried to synchronize his base Super Saiyan form with the Super Saiyan God. It is almost identical to the base Super Saiyan form, but Son Goku’s hair would turn a cyanish-blue color and his aura would also turn into a blue color with some gold mixed in. This form offers Son Goku the kind of power that far surpasses that of the Super Saiyan God form. It can also be powered up even more if Son Goku uses Kaio-Ken.
The currently most powerful transformation that Son Goku can do. He learned to attain this transformation after finally getting what Whis meant previously during the training. This form allows Goku to be able to completely synchronize his natural drive with his impulses, granting him the full power both offensively and defensively. In this form, Goku’s power far exceeds that of a normal God of Destruction. However, this form is still inaccessible at will by Goku, and it can only be used in a matter of minutes.

Goku Transformations: The Complete List Of All Goku Forms
The Dragonball Z series is known for its intense transformations and power-ups. In fact, Goku and his transformations show no slowing down either, with the most recent form being Ultra Instinct.
Goku is known as the main protagonist in the Dragonball Z series, based on Sun Wukong which is a character from the Chinese novel “Journey to the West”. He’s also known for having many similarities with Superman which is quite possibly what makes him one of the strongest characters on Dragon Ball Z to date.
This character possesses superhuman strength and also practices martial arts, which ends up being a lethal and super deadly combination. However, Goku is always transforming and changing into different forms and each form allows him to possess a different strength or different attribute that can help during his fights.
Continue reading to dive into all of Goku’s transformations over the years, listing as many forms as we can think of!
Goku Transformations: List of Forms
This one is the original Saiyan transformation, the Great Ape is limited to whatever race they are, like most entries on this list. The Great Ape is first seen in Dragon Ball, although it’s far more often during the events of Dragon Ball Z because both Gohan and Vegeta are able to turn into a Great Ape. While in this form, the user and his power grow extremely strong, and so does their body size. The downfall is this form also has severe side effects on the fighters mental state, because that person can become almost “beast-like” or just plain apeshit.
The Kaio-ken form is introduced pretty early on in Dragon Ball Z, when Goku decided to first use the transformation to go up against Vegeta. The form will multiply his power by a certain amount, and so this is a transformation where multipliers definitely have to be used wisely and taken into account at all times. The most powerful Kaio-ken power-up Goku ever attempted on his own (meaning without Super Saiyan or another transformation or power-up) is 20 times his base form.
This is the most iconic transformation/form in all of Dragon Ball, the Super Saiyan is a transformation exclusive to the Saiyan race. You will be able to spot this form thanks to its bright golden glow, and the spiky yellow hair that the user gets while in this state. Also while Goku powers up, he gains increased speed and power, which is first demonstrated when Goku goes Super Saiyan during episode 95 of Dragon Ball Z, after witnessing the death of his lifelong friend Krillin.
South Kai is the one who names Veku and appears in the movie Fusion Reborn when Vegeta screws up the fusion dance as he and Goku battle Janemba. What should have resulted in the birth of Gogeta ended up creating a short obese man with hardly any skills at all in combat.
Veku is not able to perform techniques that Goku and Vegeta could easily pull off separately, such as flight or even a “ki blast”. He resorts to running away from Janemba, with a move he refers to as the “Rabbit Feet” technique. To be honest, this is probably one of the most useless forms of Goku’s and sometimes I wonder why they even have this form.
False Super Saiyan
Goku transforms into this split-personality Super Saiyan state near the end of the movie Lord Slug, during his battle with the titular villain. Similar to the Super Saiyan transformation, the False Super Saiyan form emits a golden aura, but Goku keeps his black hair and his eyes gloss over entirely.
In this state he can become a force to reckon with because of the split-personality he obtains during this form. He’s almost hard to follow or understand what his next move is because he can soak in different fighting skills during this form as two different people.
Super Saiyan Rage
Super Saiyan became less important as time went on, due to the prevalence of other forms, which caused predictability to arise when the heroes would use the same forms repeatedly, this would make the shows boring and unable to watch. So to fight this, the writers began allowing Goku, Vegeta and other Saiyans to tap into immense strength during high moments of emotional distress. This energy and outburst would later be called Super Saiyan Rage, or sometimes Super Saiyan Anger.
Super Saiyan 2
Super Saiyan 2 is obviously an upgrade of Super Saiyan, which drastically increases the users strength and speed far beyond what Super Saiyan could ever achieve. While the two are very similar in appearance to the base and core form, Super Saiyan 2 can be easily spotted because of the electricity that arcs around the whole entire body.
Spirit Bomb Absorbed
Although this form doesn’t have a real name, it has been pegged as ‘spirit bomb absorbed Goku’, and there’s a back story to this. At the end of the movie Super Android 13! Goku resorts to using the Spirit Bomb. When the technique is fully charged and ready to go, however, Goku attempts to turn into a Super Saiyan, but passes out due to the imbalance of a pure Spirit Bomb and impure Saiyan heart. Luckily, Goku wakes up to find he has absorbed the attack. Spirit Bomb Absorbed Goku is able to easily destroy Android 13 making Spirit Bomb Absorbed an almost magical superhuman power.
Super Saiyan 3
This is the next evolution of Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2, and is most clearly distinguished by the extreme hair growth that is featured with it. Like the forms before it, Super Saiyan 3 radically increases strength and speed, at the expense of energy consumption.
For this reason, it’s rarely used, because even the big and bad Goku can’t maintain this form for long. So while this form has tons of power and speed, it is almost too good to be true because you’ll lose just as much (maybe even more) as you will gain.
The Ascended Super Saiyan, or more commonly known as the Ultra Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan Third Grade, this state recurs through the Android and Cell sagas, although Goku is seen using it for only for a very short and brief moment. Future Trunks is best known for using this form during his fight with Perfect Cell. This transformation increases the user’s muscle mass beyond human capability, which is exactly why Goku and Vegeta (both listed users of this form) never even consider it as something they would want to chance.
Mystic or Ultimate Gohan
Ultimate Gohan (sometimes referred to as Mystic Gohan), doesn’t exactly have a drastic appearance change that is noticeable, which is somewhat helpful against his enemies because it allows Gohan to appear in what is essentially his base form. The lack of flair is made up for by the near infinite potential that Ultimate Gohan has.
This form is given to Gohan after going through oddly specific training with Elder Kai. Once completed, the Elder Kai exclaims that Gohan’s full potential is now unlocked, thus granting him the Ultimate status. This new power allows him to tap into boundless energy, only limited by the amount of training that Gohan puts into it.
The Super Kaio-ken transformation is Goku’s first attempt to combine his Super Saiyan state with the Kaio-ken technique hence the name. This form debuts during the tournament on Other World, which is when Pikkon and Goku fight and face off. Statistically, the Kaio-ken bonus is said to double the power of a Super Saiyan, so Goku should technically have exactly the same power as if he were a Super Saiyan 2. However, there is a difference and that difference is that this form has major setbacks.
The Kais actually gift the Potara Earrings and when they are worn, they will merge the bodies of two people together. The resulting fusion forms a new person who is many times stronger than the two entities could ever hope to be as separate entities. It is basically just a way for two Dragon Ball Z characters to multiply and gain double the strength and knowledge they possess alone.
The first time Vegito was ever brought to life was through the use of these earrings when Goku and Vegeta used them during the Buu Saga.
As we said, Vegito was first seen as the result of Goku and Vegeta using the Potara earrings fusion, during the Buu saga, and this form is suggested to multiply their power levels rather than just to combine them. In his base form, Vegito is more than a match for Super Buu, even when he is Gohan-absorbed and turned into a fighter. This puts him way above and beyond Super Saiyan 3 and is somewhat compatible with Super Saiyan 4.
Super Saiyan 4
This form is not actually made after or from Super Saiyan 3, and instead is more than anything related to the Great Ape form. It’s easily spotted because this form makes the user actually use its tail and grow hair all over their bodies, not just on their head.
Unlike the other Super Saiyan transformations, which can be trained to obtain after you first unlock the base, Super Saiyan. Keep in mind, Super Saiyan 4 has an elaborate series of checks the user must meet in order to achieve it. The most important step first is that the user must be a Great Ape, channeling this Great Ape energy within themselves and focus on their mind and body regaining control over themselves, which will then unlock the Super Saiyan 4.
We think it’s a little out there just to obtain a transformation or new form, but alls fair in love and war, right?
Golden Great Ape
This form is accomplished when Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan while still being in his Great Ape state. The result is in the name becoming a Golden Great Ape, and the potential multipliers for the Golden Great Ape are sky high and continue to skyrocket as you stay in the form. All we can really know for sure is that Goku, who could have turned Super Saiyan 3 at this point, needed this transformation to overpower Baby. The only problem was that even Goku had trouble controlling its destructive power.
Just another case of destructive power that costs too much to use!
Super Saiyan God
Super Saiyan God is a huge jump ahead in the right direction when it comes to strength and capability. Super Saiyan God doesn’t use normal Ki and is instead charged with Godly Ki, a much stronger power source than most mortals would ever be able to accomplish as Goku can.
Super Saiyan God is most easily recognized by its fiery red glow and the fiery red hair they possess. Much stronger than Super Saiyan 3 or 4 ever thought of being.
Super Saiyan Blue
After super intense training, a fighter can enter the Super Saiyan Blue state. As the name suggests, this powerup is blue, making it easy to see and it stands out far more than the traditional yellow and gold forms and balls of energy.
Super Saiyan Blue has only ever been achieved by Goku and Vegeta, and its all thanks to their extensive training with Beerus and Whis which are two of the strongest characters in all of Dragon Ball. This form is used super frequently throughout the entire run of Dragon Ball Super, which has caused Super Saiyan Blue to become the most popular transformation for that series.
Ultra Instinct is the most recent and by far the greatest powerup to be unlocked in Dragon Ball. It looks a little different depending on the state that is acquired, but once a fighter taps into the full Ultra Instinct, an aura of white and blue surrounds them and their hair and eyes both turn grey. It’s also said many times that Ultra Instinct radiates noticeable amounts of heat.
Ultra Instinct is a huge boost to the users power and speed, like many other forms, but that’s not its primary purpose. Instead, Ultra Instinct is meant to intensely change and strengthen how a warrior fights. It allows them to react instinctually, causing their movements and attacks to happen so fast that almost no one can see them happening, sometimes before even they know it’s about to happen. That is what instinct is about, after all.
Legendary Super Saiyan
This is one of the very few forms that for a long time was exclusive to an enemy. Although it can still be called Super Saiyan, the Legendary upfront means that this isn’t the same as the normal form, and therefore it’s considered a more powerful Super Saiyan form, hence the legendary.
This form can be seen because of the people who use it having a greenish aura around them and usually will have their hair shining green as well.
Goku Transformations: From Bad to Best
# 5 Veku
Veku is known as the failed fusion transformation between Goku and Vegito, when they tried to take down Janemba. Its such a terrible transformation, its first and only debut was during the movie Fusion Reborn. They hated the transformation so much, it was never used again and we dont see it coming back anytime soon.
# 4 Great Ape
Probably the most misunderstood form, the Great Ape isnt all its cracked up to be. While the user does possess superhuman strength during this transformation, it still isnt one of the top 3 or even top 5 forms that Goku can turn into. And then there is just something about those tails that people really started to despise, making the Great Ape not so popular amongst users.
# 3 Super Saiyan 3
Those beautiful golden locks are meant for something more than beauty which makes Super Saiyan 3 fall right in the middle of the pack when it comes to being the best or the worst transformation. Its somewhat right down the middle, giving Goku x more power than that of Super Saiyan 2 but still not as good as the original Super Saiyan form.
# 2 Ultra Instinct
Ultra Instinct, as said before, is one of the newest forms and transformations today. Debuting in , it has now also doubled as the most bad-ass form of Goku today, besides of course the infamous Super Saiyan (which we will talk about next). The powers are actually in the name, allowing the user to become almost psychic, knowing every move his enemy will make before his enemy even makes it. This is actually what makes Ultra Instinct so deadly, the fact that nobody knows, not even Goku, what could happen next, it all depends on that instinct.
# 1 Super Saiyan
No list of strong transformations would be complete without listing the Super Saiyan as numero uno! So, what makes this well-known form the best transformation for Goku? While it might not be the most powerful form, it is the most classic of them all and gives Goku his iconic glowing blonde look. While it may only charge Goku up 50% more than his original form, we bet when you think of Goku transformations, Super Saiyan is almost always your number one choice!
- This article is about the original character. For other uses, see Goku (disambiguation).
"No, see, I don't think like I'm saving the world. The fact is, I go into every conflict for the battle, what's on my mind is beating down the strongest to get stronger. That's how this tournament happened, too. That seems to be a recurring mistake on my part. Maybe that's the Saiyan in me, too stubborn to stand down in the face of that prospect. But I can't bear the thought of the blood of everyone back home being on my hands because I couldn't resist this. This is for them, now. Would you help me?"
Son Goku (,Son Gokū), born Kakarot (カカロット,Kakarotto), is the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball series. Goku is a Saiyan male originally sent to destroy Earth as an infant. A head injury at an early age alters his memory, ridding him of his initial destructive nature and allowing him to grow up to become one of Earth's greatest defenders. He constantly strives and trains to be the greatest warrior possible, which has kept the Earth and the universe safe from destruction many times.
Concept and creation
The original incarnation of Goku in the Dragon Ball prototype Dragon Boy was Tangtong. The original inspirations for that story were Hong Kong martial arts films, including Bruce Lee films such as Enter the Dragon () and Jackie Chan films such as Drunken Master (); Toriyama later said he had a young Jackie Chan in mind for a live-action Goku, stating that "nobody could play Goku but him."
The Dragon Ball universe began as a loose adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, with Goku himself as an alternate take on Sun Wukong. Similarities between the two include their mischievous nature and possession of the Power Pole and Flying Nimbus (which, in Japanese, have the same name as the source material).
When Toriyama started his first draft of Dragon Ball, he originally planned on making Goku full monkey to make the series more faithful to Journey to the West. During Toriyama's second draft, Goku was instead a full human dressed in sailor clothes that rode a flight mecha instead of the Flying Nimbus. Toriyama's third draft became the final design.
Goku's full name is also based on Sun Wukong. The name "Son Goku" is simply the Japanese on'yomi rendering of Sun Wukong, as Chinese and Japanese share the same characters but with different pronunciations. "Sun/Son" is a common Chinese surname that normally means "grandchild", while "Wukong/Goku" is a common Buddhist name that means "perceiving air/awakened to emptiness". Reading "Sun Wukong" via the first and final characters only through the Japanese kun'yomi rendering system makes it read out as "Mago Gosora", used at some point as a gag in the original manga's run by the World Tournament Announcer.
Goku was revealed a month before the Dragon Ball manga started, in postcards sent to members of the Akira Toriyama Preservation Society.
Goku's first appearance was on the last page of "Grand Finale", the last chapter of the Dr. Slump manga, advertising Dragon Balls upcoming debut.
Goku's Saiyan birth name, Kakarot, is a pun on "carrot". Goku's family, like most Saiyans, are all named after root vegetables (burdock, leek, radish, and carrot) or even the word "vegetable" itself.
While Goku is an overall good person, Akira Toriyama designed him as one who fights mostly for personal joy of challenging strong opponents. To which, Toriyama notes that the anime tends to go overboard in making Goku look heroic, and that his original depiction of Goku in the manga has certain "poisonous" traits.
The primary reason why Akira Toriyama created his Super Saiyan state with blond hair was so that his assistant would no longer have to spend so much time coloring Goku's hair black - thus saving time. Due to also having the effect of making Goku appear stronger, it killed two birds with one stone.
Goku's Super Saiyan form was heavily influenced by the martial artist Bruce Lee. According to Toriyama, Goku's piercing eyes were based on Lee's paralyzing glare.Dragon Ball Z anime character designer Tadayoshi Yamamuro also used Lee as a reference for Goku's Super Saiyan form, stating that, when he "first becomes a Super Saiyan, his slanting pose with that scowling look in his eyes is all Bruce Lee."
Goku looks almost exactly like his father, possessing the same spiky black hairstyle, dark-colored eyes, and facial features. However, he has softer eyes, a kind demeanor, and a lighter-pale skin complexion from his mother. Goku's most distinguishing physical characteristic is his hair. He has three bangs hanging to the right of his forehead and two bangs hanging to the left. His hair also stands up in the front with four spikes and three bangs in the back (later in the anime, he has five spikes in the front and four in the back). Goku was born with the signature tail of the Universe 7 Saiyans, which was long and prehensile with brown fur. It was removed and regrown multiple times in his early childhood, but in his late teens, Goku's tail was permanently removed by Kami in order to prevent his Great Ape transformation.
At age 12, Goku was rather short and appeared even younger than he was, being considered less than 10 years old (people were surprised when learning his actual age). His somewhat simple-minded personality also gave people the impression that he was as young as he looked. During the next few years, Goku did not go through any physical changes, other than his muscles becoming more pronounced. By age 15, he began showing noticeable increases in height. By age 18, he had a considerable growth spurt, growing taller than most of his friends and developing a well-built physique. He is also considered very handsome, as noted by various women including Bulma and Heles. His physical changes made him almost indistinguishable from before and was only recognized by his signature naïve personality and "trademark" hairstyle. By age 25, Goku had another growth spurt, and became similar in height to his taller human allies and much more muscular.
Due to his love of training, he is most commonly seen wearing a Gi. Originally, Goku wore an open blue gi secured with a white bow-tied obi over his waist, red wristbands, and dark blue kung fu shoes and also a tank top. After training under Master Roshi, Goku wore the basic Turtle School Uniform; consisting of a closed red gi (later orange) secured by a black knot-tied obi over his waist, blue wristbands, and blue kung fu shoes, with Roshi's kanji on the back and front-left side of his shirt. After training with Kami and Mr. Popo, Goku wore a black short-sleeved undershirt (later dark blue) with this gi and replaced his shoes with dark blue boots with a yellow border and red laces. After training under King Kai, Goku wore King Kai's kanji on the back of his gi shirt. During the Battle on Planet Namek, Goku wore his own kanji on both sides of his gi shirt. During the Android conflict and Majin Buu conflict, Goku wore a more plain version of this gi that lacked any kanji and featured a blue sash-style obi over his waist, as well as the same dark blue undershirt, same wristbands and the same boots from his previous gi, but with a red border and yellow/tan laces. He later retains this outfit throughout most of Dragon Ball Super as he regains his own kanji on both sides of his gi shirt.
During his early training under Whis, Goku wore an orange traditional and loose gi, with Whis' kanji on the front-left of his shirt, that was secured together with a blue obi tied in a knot at the left of his waist. He also wore blue wristbands that cover nearly his entire forearms and blue boots that clasp together on the front of his shins.
In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Goku returns to wearing a knot-style obi with his regular uniform and "Go" kanji (essentially regaining his Frieza Saga appearance). In addition, to compensate for the wintery climate he is on, he also wears a long blue snow jacket with a high turtleneck, white stripes down his shoulders and arms and bold purple letters of "SAB" over the front-left side of it. It also has black gloves. In the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, Goku is given the emblem of the Galactic Patrol in place of his own on the front of his uniform and also switches back to wearing a sash-style obi. In the Granolah the Survivor Saga, Goku regains Whis' kanji on his standard gi when the angel trains him in honing Ultra Instinct.
Goku in the Prison Planet Saga
Goku's Grand Minister-style clothes
Goku's appearance in the Universe Creation Saga
When he appears in the Prison Planet Saga, Goku wears an outfit identical to the one Whis gave him, but instead with a Capsule Corp logo. He also wears his blue shirt underneath the gi. In the Universal Conflict Saga, he wears an outfit identical to the Grand Minister's. The attire consists of a dark blue long-sleeved shirt with an orange circle over the chest, with baggy shoulder pads that runs beneath his red-colored belt with his kanji on the round belt-buckle. The shirt is complimented by a matching color pair of jodhpur-like pants, and white boots that run beneath his shins.
In the Universe Creation Saga, Goku's attire is the same from the previous arc but this time, it has a lighter tone of orange and the blue undershirt, tied-belt, wristbands and boots are now replaced with a lighter black color. later on, in the New Space-Time War Saga, after being released from the Demon's Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Goku returns with Vegeta with the Dark Empire's logo imprinted on his gi.
By the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku wears a turquoise gi with a white knot-style obi, orange wristbands, dark green pants, and black kung fu shoes with orange stockings. In the cover of the Goodbye, Dragon World volume of the manga, this outfit's color is different. The gi is lime green, his wristbands are purple, his pants are cyan, and he wears the boots from his previous outfit, albeit purple.
Despite his fighting gi being his preferred look, Goku is not without other types of wardrobe, such as a suit and tie, casual clothes like blue pants with a button-down red shirt, or an orange and black jacket with a white sleeveless undershirt, light green pants and brown shoes. When returning home to prepare for the androids, Goku wore a outfit similar to one from his youth; a white tank top with periwinkle Chinese pants with a white sash and purplish brown toe shoes and white socks. His farmer attire consists of light beige collared denim jacket with a white scarf around his neck and a charcoal gray short sleeved undershirt, light beige pants with a black belt around his waist and black boots. The sleeves on his jacket has been folded into white cuffs.
In Dragon Ball GT. Goku's skin tone got a noticeable tan. His general outfit is a blue gi with a white knot-style obi, pink wristbands, ochre pants, and black kung fu shoes with white stockings, which overall is very similar to his outfit at the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament. Due to the carelessness of Emperor Pilaf, Goku was wished back into a year-old. While essentially looking the same as he did back then, Goku showed considerably more defined muscle. Later, with the aid of Old Kai, Goku regenerates his tail, which would poke out from his pants. years later at the 64th World Martial Arts Tournament, despite growing back to his physical prime without transforming, he was not still seen with his tail. However, in one ending, he is seen with a tail in adult form. During which, he wears the outfit from the 28th Martial Arts Tournament. He also wears his Power Pole again.
When re-grown up, GT Goku appears in the Adventure Mode of Extreme Butōden, he wears his classic outfit from Dragon Ball Super. In Dragon Ball Minus, an infant Goku was seen wearing a standard Battle Armor of the Frieza Army when being sent to Earth. It is a full body model with a dark-colored chest protection and light-colored outward-pointing pads on his shoulders and at the hips that hang over his upper legs. He also wore dark jumpsuit shorts and light boots with dark legging and also dark armguards.

Transformation (変身,Henshin) is the ability to change one's body in order to tap into greater stores of energy, strength and speed.
List of transformations
Main article: List of transformations
There are several Saiyan transformation lines in the series, which are: the Great Ape line, the Super Saiyan line, and the Super Saiyan God line. Additionally, some forms can be mixed together to make new transformations.
There have also been several occurrences of other races utilizing Super Saiyan-like forms.
- Great Ape
The Great Ape is one of the most common transformations seen used by pure Saiyans. This form is only accessible if the Saiyan has a tail. While in the form of a Great Ape, if the tail is cut off, the Saiyan returns to his/her normal state. This transformation is triggered by when Blutz Waves are transferred to the Saiyan. The most common supply of Blutz Waves are given from a Full Moon. If there is no moon available, a Saiyan may use a Power Ball. The Power Ball emits Blutz Waves used to activate the transformation. Once transformed, the Great Ape's power and strength are increased tenfold from the base form. If just started with this transformation, the Great Ape may go into a rampage. This form had been rendered obsolete ever since the remaining pure-blooded Saiyans transformed into Super Saiyans. A Great Ape who transforms into a Super Saiyan becomes a Golden Great Ape, which is the key to attaining the Super Saiyan 4 transformation.
- Super Saiyan
A Super Saiyan is a legendary transformation of legend in the Saiyan race. Only a select few of the Saiyans have been able to achieve this rare form. In legend, a Super Saiyan is a warrior pure of heart and awakened by fury. The first Saiyan in centuries to achieve this form was Goku, after seeing Krillin's death at the hands of Frieza. In this transformation, the hair raises and turns a golden color and the eye color turns blue-green. A Super Saiyan's power level shoots up between ten to fifty times its normal amount, depending on the source.
There are also a few variations of this transformation: Pseudo Super Saiyan, a prequel to the form appearing only in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, Super Saiyan Second Grade, an advancement in the power of the original Super Saiyan state; Super Saiyan Third Grade, an even stronger advancement in the power of the original Super Saiyan state; Super Saiyan Full Power, the state of mental and physical perfection of the Super Saiyan transformation itself, rather than an advanced stage.
There are also three powered up improvements of Super Saiyan called Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, and Super Saiyan Rage. A Super Saiyan 2 is a full transformation beyond the regular Super Saiyan. The first Super Saiyan 2 was born in the Cell Games. After seeing his friends being brought to near-death by the Cell Juniors, Gohan went into a rage, causing his transformation to Super Saiyan 2. Gohan easily overpowered Cell after the transformation, as well as killing all of the Cell Junior with Quiet Rage, and eventually killing Cell with the Father-Son Kamehameha. A few Saiyans achieved the form after Gohan, such as Goku and Vegeta.
The Super Saiyan 3 is the transformation that follows the Super Saiyan 2 form. The first Saiyan to achieve this form was Goku. He discovered this form while doing training in Other World. He first presented this form in his first confrontation with Majin Buu. The only other Saiyan to achieve this form, was the fusion, Gotenks. There are no records of any other Saiyan achieving the Super Saiyan 3 transformation. Exceptions for other Saiyans reaching the Super Saiyan 3 form are in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 which features Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta and Broly, and in Dragon Ball Heroes which features Super Saiyan 3 Future Trunks, Trunks, and Gogeta. The Super Saiyan 3 form is also the final Super Saiyan transformation in the original Dragon Ball manga.
Super Saiyan Rage is a powerful transformation that Future Trunks attained in the anime through the power of intense and violent rage. This form allowed Trunks to hold his own against Super Saiyan RoséGoku Black and Future Zamasu.
The Broly-type Super Saiyan forms are a separate evolution from the ordinary Super Saiyan forms. The lines equivalents to the normal Super Saiyan form are its A-type and C-type Super Saiyan forms.
The Legendary Super Saiyan form is a unique form of Super Saiyan only usable by some Saiyans. The only Legendary Super Saiyan shown was the movie-only character Broly, his clone, and the Universe 6 Saiyan Kale. The Legendary Super Saiyan form is a different evolution to the other Super Saiyan forms, and thus a Legendary Super Saiyan's versions of the Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, and Super Saiyan 4 form are also greatly altered from usual.
- Super Saiyan God
Super Saiyan God is a Saiyan transformation much more powerful than Super Saiyan 3. The Oracle Fish foretold the appearance of the Super Saiyan God to the God of Destruction Beerus, and this is what hastens Beerus' awakening in the film. When Goku transforms into this form, he powers up with flame-like aura (as opposed to the gold aura with previous Super Saiyan forms). He then appears with his hair glowing red and with a shape similar to that of his base form, red eyes, slightly thinner, and he has a flame-like aura. The power of this ultimate warrior excites even the God of Destruction Beerus. The form allows Goku to sense godly ki and he can absorb attacks by consuming ki, but he reverts to his regular Super Saiyan form due to the form's time limit.
A Saiyan who obtains the strength of a Super Saiyan God can also access the power by becoming a God-like Saiyan - a form virtually indistinguishable from their base form, but with the power of Super Saiyan God.
- Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan
Once a Saiyan has managed to retain the power of the Super Saiyan God form, within themselves by training themselves even further, a Saiyan can attain the even more powerful Super Saiyan Blue transformation. In this state the user looks like a regular Super Saiyan, however, they have blue hair and a fiery blue aura.
In the anime, the Super Saiyan Blue form can also be combined with the Kaio-ken, resulting in an even more powerful state.
Goku Black possesses his own version of the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form: Super Saiyan Rosé. It resembles Super Saiyan Blue but has pink hair with white highlights and the aura resembles a flame of darkness. This change is brought about by the fact Goku Black was already a God before taking Goku's body.
By breaking their limit, a user of Super Saiyan Blue can achieve the Super Saiyan God SS Evolved, a form far more powerful than Super Saiyan Blue.
Through controlling the power of evil, Vegeta attained a form surpassing his prior Super Saiyan Blue states.
The Crimson-Masked Saiyan managed to ascend beyond his ordinary Super Saiyan Rosé, achieving Super Saiyan Rosé 2, Super Saiyan Rosé 3 as well as Super Saiyan Rosé Full Power.
- Golden Great Ape
A Saiyan is capable of combining their Great Ape and Super Saiyan forms together, resulting in the Golden Great Ape form, upon attaining a human heart, the Golden Great Ape will transform into a Super Saiyan 4.
- Super Saiyan 4
Super Saiyan 4 is a Saiyan transformation present in the anime only sequel Dragon Ball GT and was never mentioned in the original Dragon Ball manga though has appeared in the Super Dragon Ball Heroes manga. The only way a Saiyan can attain Super Saiyan 4 is if he is already a Super Saiyan, can transform into a Golden Great Ape, and regain conscious control over the form. While referred to as a "Super Saiyan", it is not a part of the Super Saiyan line of transformations. After this form is attained once, it can be accessed at any point.
When further powered up a more powerful state known as Super Full Power Saiyan 4 can be achieved, and breaking this form's limits by filling it to the brim with ki results lets the Saiyan achieve Super Full Power Saiyan 4 Limit Breaker.
- Evil Saiyan
Saiyans can take on an empowered state known as Evil Saiyan. This form grows the user's hair to the same length as a Super Saiyan 3 - but keeps it it's natural color. Aside from an increase in power, Saiyans using this form possess an Evil Aura which has special properties and numerous utilities.
- Human-type Earthling
In the manga and anime, several Humans display their own transformations, Tsukutsun Tsun turns into a tiger when touched by a girl, and is capable of taking on a greatly empowered state when angered and Master Roshi can transform into his Max Power form, greatly increasing his muscle mass and height. Witchcraft is able to transform a human into a Jiang Shi.
Earthlings can become avatars via Dragon Ball Heroes machines, these avatars are capable of undergoing Class-up, Super Class-up, God Class-up, and Super God Class-up. Ultimate Class-up Sign allows their avatar to achieve Ultra Instinct Sign. In Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission, Beat and several his Dragon Ball Heroes teammates can use the Hero Switch to take on the form of their selected Hero Avatar in the SDBH game world and later on the real world. Additionally the Hero Switch doubles as a Transformation Watch that allows the user to transform into their own high tech Great Saiyaman Suit, though this built-in feature is only used by Xeno Trunks (aka Great Saiyaman 3) or Beat (aka Great Saiyaman 4). As Beat is revealed to be a Saiyan hybrid descendant of Goku and Chi-Chi he has the ability to naturally transform into a Super Saiyan without the use of a Saiyan avatar. Beat achieves his natural Super Saiyan form after Legendary Super SaiyanBroly seemingly kills Note (in reality she is only knocked out). Additionally when his teammates (Note, Froze, Kagyu, Kabra, Chamel, Zen, & Nim) transfer their energy into Beat while fighting Sealas (Fused) in the Time Nest, he manages to achieve his natural Super Saiyan Blue form.
In Dragon Ball Online, in Age Humans are capable of transforming into Super Saiyans after wishing for the transformation from Shenron. This is due to humans having become crossbreed with the Saiyan race via Goku and Vegeta's descendants.
Mr. Satan is capable of taking on the High Tension state in video games. Additionally, his god form "Super Mr. Satan" (from his false retelling of the "Beebus" battle) is actually a transformation for him in IC Carddass Dragon Ball.
- Animal-type Earthling
Man-Wolf switches between a human and wolf form depending on whether the moon is out or not.
- Great Namekian
Several Namekians have displayed the power to increase their size and turn into Great Namek. The user takes on this form by invigorating their cells - causing them to grow. They can choose the amount they grow, with the largest known size being referred to as "Super Giant Form" and being comparable in size to a mountain. Piccolo also replicates Garlic Jr.'s Gigantification. Thorough Dark Evolution Lord Slug transforms into a Dark Giant.
- Super Namekian
Namekians who unlock a higher consciousness within themselves become Super Nameks, resulting in their strength increasing exponentially. Some Namekians are able to become Super Namek on their own. One method of becoming a Super Namek is to fuse with another Namekian.
- Red-eyed Namekian form
Some Namekians have displayed a special red-eyed form that powers up the user as much as Super Saiyan would a Saiyan. The method of obtaining this form is unknown, and it has only appeared a few times in video games.
Main article: Gigantification Several members of the Makyan race have the ability to take on a more muscular "Super form". This form is used by Garlic Jr. and his top minions, with Garlic Jr. using a Super form which greatly increases his size and gives him a dark green color and a slightly different shaped head.
Main article: Monster Form
Zarbon has the ability to transform from his Elegant Form into a more powerful Monster Form, which holds his true power. Other members of Zarbon's race, who appear in video games, are either in their Elegant Form or Monster Form but do not switch from one to the other.
- Transforming Ability
Members of Frieza's race can have many transformations. Uniquely for them, these transformations actually are used to suppress and by extension conserve energy. This makes it easier for them to hold back without making a conscious effort, causing their natural form to be their actual strongest state. While unknown if it is a standard number for all in this race, both Frieza and (in the movie only) Cooler are known to have three suppressing forms.
Frieza's brother Cooler also displayed a Super Evolution, which increased his power unlike the other forms of this transformation line.
- Ultimate Evolution
The strongest transformation of Frieza's race is able to obtain is an Ultimate Evolution. Frieza is the first member of his race to achieve the ultimate evolution which he dubs "Golden Frieza". This state can also be mastered through improved energy control.
In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi scenario "The True Ultimate Android", an Android 17 is shown to be able to transform into Super 17 without having to fuse with the second one, though without the other 17 his Super 17 form is imperfect and is defeated by Perfect Cell.
Several beings in the series have been transformed into cyborgs, usually either to save their life, increase their power, or both. Notable enhanced Earthlings include Cyborg Tao, Android 17, Android 18, and Dr. Gero (Android 20).
Members of the Frieza Race can cybernetically enhance themselves with Cosmic Suits.
- Mechanical Type Androids
Android 13 is able to become Super Android 13 upon absorbing the computer chips and energy reactors of Android 14 and Android 15
Main article: Form Change
Cell must absorb Android 17 and Android 18 to advance from his Imperfect form to his Semi-Perfect form and Perfect form. He is returned to his Semi-Perfect form after Android 18 is removed from him by force, but thanks to his Saiyan and Namekian DNA coupled with a near-lethal injury, he is able to regenerate and advance into a Super Perfect form. Android 13 transforms into a more powerful form as well, from using the memory cards and batteries of his destroyed comrades, Android 15 and Android
