Coin Collecting With Tyler's Blog

This is making me angry!

| Coin Collecting With Tyler

Last night I was watching a coin show from the Home Shopping Network ( HSN), and it blew my mind how expensive there prices are for their coins. When I was watching tv that night I saw them selling a 1921 Morgan Dollar and a 1922 Peace Dollar for 150 dollars. I am like are you serious right now! I can go to any local coin shop in my area or even go on eBay and buy these to coins for less than 50 dollars in BU Condition. That night I went on eBay and I saw someone selling the same set for 62 dollars. As a YN I try to buy coins on good deals and I look for quality not quantity. I was so angry that HSN was ripping people off that don’t know enough about coins to know what the real prices of those coins are. When I watch this show I really laugh at there sales tactics! The one person I hate on this show is Mike Mezack who is always saying “ This is a limited edition coin and you can’t get it anywhere else”. The next thing he was selling was a 2020 Proof ANACS Silver Eagle for 180 dollars and he was saying that these coins were out of stock. So I wanted a prove a point I went on eBay and I saw someone selling a Proof 70 2020 silver Eagle for 100 dollars graded by PCGS. Folks be careful what coins you buys and we’re you buy them from talk to a reputable coin dealer in your area and he will tell you what to buy and will give you a good price. Here are some of the HSN Stupid Pictures below! Thanks,Tyler Jorgenson

Hitting the shelves today from the United States Mint is its "Type 2" 2021-S Proof American Silver Eagle. The strike continues the series which dates back to 1986, but it features an enhanced obverse, a brand new reverse design, and a new reeded edge variation.

Product images of Type 2 2021-S Proof American Silver Eagle

This coin is produced to collector proof quality at the San Francisco Mint and carries the facility’s denoting “S” mintmark. It goes on sale beginning at Noon ET with an initial household order limit of three and a product limit of 200,000.

The updated and new imagery debuted a bit earlier this year on the investor-grade bullion 2021 American Silver Eagle and on a companion of sorts to this latest release, the West Point Mint’s collector Type 2, 2021-W Proof American Silver Eagle which launched last month and sold out in minutes.

Type 2, 2021-W Proof American Silver Eagle (obverse)

American Silver Eagle obverses (heads side) have always featured Adolph A. Weinman’s Liberty design as first seen on 1916-1947 half-dollars. It remains for this newest issue, but it has been “refreshed.”

"The San Francisco-minted coin’s obverse features a refreshed depiction of Adolph A. Weinman’s full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left," the U.S. Mint describes. "The Mint employed technological advancements that resulted in a design that is now a closer reflection of Weinman’s original vision and includes the addition of his traditional artist mark."

Obverse inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2021." Weinman’s artist mark is also shown.

As for the proof coin’s reverse, it has completely changed. Gone is John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle with shield design. It is replaced with a depiction showing an eagle as it prepares to land, carrying an oak branch, as if to add it to a nest.

Type 2, 2021-W Proof American Silver Eagle (reverse)

Reverse inscriptions read: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER" and "ONE DOLLAR."  United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Emily Damstra created the design which was sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso.

New Anti-counterfeiting Edge

Type 2 American Silver Eagles also have a new reed pattern variation to assist in combating fakes.

Poor poor inherited coin collections from Coin Vault/HSN/ACTV/etc.

I know it's been discussed here before, but I absolutely hate walking in to a coin collection appraisal and seeing suitcases full of stuff bought from Coin Vault/HSN/etc or these magazine marketed SHQ/Prez bucks album & wood boxed sets. Makes me sick for the person who got suckered into spending a bunch of their hard earned $$$ thinking this was an "investment" and sick for the heirs that are hopeful of their parents multi-thousand dollar coin collection (accumulation) to make big bucks.

This happened to me last night. There were stacks and stacks of invoices from the TV rippers and each one I read made me a little more nauseous. The fast talkers and tactics make it really easy for a new collector (especially a non-computer savvy newbie) to get sucked in to their schemes. Mix that with living alone, lonliness, credit cards, and a non-local family that doesn't know anything about coins and you have a recipe for a really bad deal.

Just one example and I'll hush.......$1599 for 20 different AU/BU Morgans with an 1884-CC Morgan and extra Peace Dollar thrown in. These are these TV washed "commercial AU/BU" coins in the Coin Vault Coin Safe container.

Hsn Coin Sales

Occasionally I see coins for sale on HSN. Are they usually over priced and has anyone bought from them? Just wondering because I see they have page after page of coins on there web site. They also have a 2 hour coin show tonight. I have done some comparing to e-bay prices and HSN seems pretty high priced.

Agreeing with all above and adding a little. HSN, QVC, Coin Vault, and the other programs/networks which offer coins (and a lot of other trash) target the same market as eBay con artists: the naive, innocent, unknowledgeable, gullible, elderly, senile (like my mother) and various combinations of the preceding adjectives. There are far too many people out there that believe everything they read (e.g., the plague of email hoaxes), receive in the mail, and see on TV. Until and unless truth in advertising laws are passed and enforced and perhaps a few fraudsters are lined up against the wall, Barnum's Theorum will be proven hundreds of thousands times per day.

Pardon my bitterness; my mother spent tens of thousands of dollars on fraudulent items, fraud schemes, and telemarketing sales before my father realized what was going on and shut her down. Only after our father died and my siblings and I placed our mother in an Alzheimer's home and went through her paperwork did we realize the extent to which she had been victimized. We found paid "bills" for "services rendered" for $10 to $100 with no explanation beyond a due date and a return envelope to some fictitious company in South Podunk. Telemarketers found in her a treasure trove of gullibility for which she received junk or nothing. Certain lynch laws need to be revived </rant>.

Very true and sad also. Whats suprising is to watch how fast there (HSN) coins go as they do usually sell out. I guess what gets a lot of people is the fact that corporations like HSN,QVC do sell a lot of good things also, so people start to blindly trust them to sell at a reasonal & fair market price.Unfortunatly with coins that seems not to be the case. After doing some evaluating of the coins they do sell, they seem to be marked up at almost exactly 50% of true value every time.
Sorry about you Mom, I hate to see bottom feeders take advantage of our seniors.

I HAVE CONTACTED HSN ABOUT THEM HAVING THE “COIN COLLECTOR” ON THERE DESPITE HIS MISLEADING AND OUTRAGIOUSLY OVER PRICED COINS. | ALL I GOT BACK WAS A STANDARD AUTO RESPONSE. | I FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT HSN HAVING THIS GUY ON. THEY HAVE A REPUTATION FOR BEING A GREAT COMPANY TO BUY FROM BUT THEY TOTALLY NEGLECT ANY OF THE WARNINGS I SENT THEM ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS BEING OVERCHARGED AND MISLED BY THE RIPOFF KING…MIKE MEZACK. | I URGE EVERYONE TO AVOID BUYING ANYTHING FROM HSN’S COIN COLLECTOR SHOW. IF YOU SEE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BUY, I SUGGEST GOING ON EBAY AND COMPARING PRICES AND BUY FROM DEALERS WITH 100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK. | THE OTHER COIN SHOWS ON TV ARE NOT MUCH BETTER. I WATCH THEM FOR AMUZEMENT BUT WILL NEVER BUY FROM ANY OF THEM…THEY ARE ALL OVERPRICED!!! | AFTER HSN THE FOLLOWING SHOWS ARE IN MY OPINION THE WORST TO THE LESS WORSE: | 1. THE COIN VAULT…THESE ARE ALMOST AS BAD AS HSN. THEY SELL COINS THAT THEY REPRESENT AS BEING RARE BUT THEY ARE COINS MINTED BY TINY COUNTRIES THAT ARE WORTH NOTHING MORE THAN THE MELT VALUE OF THE COINS DESPITE THEY WILL CHARGE YOU 100’S….EVEN 1000% OVER IT’S ACTUAL VALUE. THEY ALSO ARE AS BAD AS HSN’S COIN COLLECTOR IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL. THEIR PARENT COMPANY ACTUALLY MINTS ITS OWN COINS…THEY CALL THEM “EXCLUSIVE”…THEY ARE WORTH NOTHING MORE THAN THE METAL CONTENT….MELT VALUE | 2. ART AND COIN TV…BARRY CHAPPELL SHOW. WAY WAY OVERPRICED BUT FUN TO WATCH. BARRY LOOKS LIKE A CAVEMAN WITH ALL THE BOTOX AND HIS HAIR!!! WHAT THE HECK IS THAT??? | 3. AAN AMERICA’S AUCTION NETWORK…THEY ALWAYS PRICE THINGS ENDING IN .77c. I GUESS THEY THINK YOU WILL THINK YOU ARE SAVING A FEW CENTS. THEY ALSO SELL THOSE WORTHLESS FOREIGN COINS MINTED BY COUNTRIES YOU PROBABLY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF. | 4. RCTV / RICKS U.S. COINS / RICK TOMASKA’S US COIN SHOW…AT LEAST HE IS INFORMATIVE. HE IS OVERPRICED BUT NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS THE OTHERS. STILL DO YOUR HOMEWORK | 5. THEN THERE IS DON DAVIS’S SHOW. POOR DON…HE TRIES HARD TO DO A GOOD SHOW BUT HE IS A 1 MAN SHOW AND JUST REPEATS HIMSELF OVER AND OVER BUT MY MAIN ISSUE WITH HIM IS THAT HIS COINS THAN HE CALLS UNCIRCULATED ARE VERY QUESTIONABLE…HORRIBLE EYE APPEAL…AND HIS SO CALLED SUPER SLIDERS ARE NOTHING MORE THAN A GRADE LOWER THAN WHAT HE IS CLAIMING THAT THEY GRADE. | IN CLOSING…PLEASE FOLKS…IF YOU SEE SOMETHING ON TV YOU WANT TO BUY…WRITE IT DOWN AND DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE GETTING RIPPED OFF.
